It Really Is About More Than Just A Color!
Help Wipe Out The "Silent Killer" Of Women By Wearing Red For Women Today!
"There is a shade of red for every woman."
... Audrey Hepburn
Let’s Talk About Heart Disease in Women
Here’s the thing—heart disease doesn’t always come with loud, obvious warning signs. In fact, it often shows up quietly, which is why it’s earned the nickname “The Silent Killer.” And unfortunately, it’s the #1 cause of death for women. That’s why spreading the word is so important.
To help raise awareness, the American Heart Association started the Go Red for Women® campaign. And every year, the first Friday in February is National Wear Red Day—in 2026, that’s February 6. It’s a day to throw on some red and show support for women’s heart health. The color red symbolizes strength, passion, and urgency in the fight against heart disease
So, how much do you really know about heart disease in women?
Here are some eye-openers:
Every 80 seconds, a woman in the U.S. dies from heart disease.
It’s the top cause of death for new moms and is behind over a third of maternal deaths. Black women, in particular, face higher risks.
Heart disease and strokes take the lives of 1 in 3 women each year.
About 57.5% of stroke deaths happen in women.
Roughly 45% of women aged 20 or older are living with some form of cardiovascular disease in the U.S.
The American Heart Association says nearly half of all adults in the U.S. have some kind of heart condition.
Awareness has dropped—back in 2009, 65% of women knew heart disease was their #1 threat. By 2019, that dropped to just 44%. Only 49% of adults correctly identify heart disease as the #1 killer in the U.S..
Women are less likely to receive CPR from bystanders because people fear doing something wrong or being accused of inappropriate behavior.
The Good News?
Since National Wear Red Day began in 2004, we’ve made a lot of progress in getting the word out. More people are talking about women’s heart health—but there’s still work to do.
So today, on February 6, 2026, wear red and start the conversation. You could help save a life—maybe even your own.
