Motivational Monday…Loyalty

Previously, on the day after the Super Bowl, I would be in temporary mourning for the loss of football… until August, when it resumed. While my love for the game remains, both the NFL and the NCAA have made it increasingly difficult for fans like me to maintain that same sense of loyalty.

What happened?

My opinion is that they did what many businesses, organizations, celebrities, and politicians have done…they lost sight of their audience.

Instead, they marketed to the people they believed to be the “today” crowd and what they wanted. They failed to say “no,” fearing social media attacks or other negative repercussions.

Of course, any business has to recognize that things, people, and times change and be ready to make adjustments.

At the same time, it’s worth remembering that there’s a reason certain people and ideas stick around.

In Texas, we have a phrase… “Dance with the one that brung ya.”

When you’re reconsidering your marketing efforts or considering rebranding your business, don’t forget the lesson learned by Cracker Barrel last year.

Whether you’re a teacher, parent, business, or agent…know and remember your audience!

Building trust takes time, but losing trust takes one poor decision.

Loyalty is vital in my book, and once I know that I cannot trust someone, it is really difficult to get back into my good graces, haha.

I am sure that you and Larry will be glued to the TV this evening to watch his team take on the #1 team in the nation, haha.  I sure hope that the #1 team prevails, sorry Larry, haha.

Brian England  - we'll be watching. I hope Peterson plays the whole game. He's supposed to be the #1 Draft pick this year, so watch him while you can.

Good morning Kathy. The coming of "NIL" for college football and the salaries now paid in the NFL Have refined "loyalty" from the game to the "money".  The players. college deep pocketed fans and NFL owners should wake up.Time for a reset or America will find another favorite sport. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin I agree. Look how Texas Tech and its alum were able to buy their team last year. I think they should call it as it is...like in baseball. The minor league, except the college players are making a lot more than minor league baseball players.

Kathy Streib - this is a great post and wake-up call to many. Loved your images and messages too with a tie-in to marketing. All fans need to wake-up and smell the coffee. Just as one cup of coffee today far exceeds the price our mothers paid when they were young (and got free refills too). If you follow the money and pay attention to cost/benefit analysis, is it worth your time and money?

Patricia Feager hitting the NFL in their wallets did make a difference and they woke up but it may have been too late.

I never heard "Dance with the one that brung ya" but I like that saying! As for the business message here, don't neglect your customer or make major changes that will send them away.

By the way, for kicks I looked up the prices or the SuperBowl a week ahead of time. The cheapest seats at that time were $6200 per person. That's ridiculous. Normal fans could never go.

This really resonates. Loyalty is built by consistency and by remembering who supported you in the first place. Change is necessary, but losing sight of your core audience can cost far more than any short term gain. Your reminder to balance evolution with respect for long standing supporters is a lesson that applies well beyond football or business.

I was very happy to see the Patriots lose. I can't stand that team. YUCK...lol (and Sam Darnold should still be a NY Jet)

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty  I am not fond of the Jets since the time they signed Tim Tebow, flew him to NYC and no one was there to introduce him. He had a press conference without any of the brass from the Jets.

All the sports seem to be pushing sports betting hard, another revenue stream no doubt. But, what about the love of the game, the spirit of competition and gamesmanship.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543      I couldn't agree more. It does go hand in hand with many players being in it only for the money.  Look at past players who did nothing after they got the big money! And, I'm not overly fond of gambling being promoted so strongly.

I have my theories but I'll stay mum for now.

Kathy I agree.  When the half time show started, I switched over to Turning Point.  I bet their ratings went way down during the half time show.  Those who advertised during that time got ripped off.

You put that so eloquently, Kathy and I am always a firm believer in knowing your audience or potentially lose it in an instant. The NFL continues to make poor decisions, the halftime show was one of them. The words to the song that BB was singing were so very vile and disgusting, it's a good thing he sung them in Spanish.

They definitely lost me.

Expert guidance. Exceptional results.

What a thoughtful reminder to slow down and stay true to the people who’ve been with you from the start, Kathy Streib. Your take on loyalty hits with a kind of quiet honesty, and it made me smile because it’s so easy to forget that simple truth in all the noise. Thanks for sharing this today, it was a nice lift.
