Multiple Fires - Flower Mound, Texas

Journal Entry 2/9/2025

Flower Mound Fire Department was on the scene of a big neighborhood fire in the older Westchester Subdivision where houses were built in the 1980s. The home fire spread to nearby neighborhood homeowners' properties, cars, fencing, and shed. Many firefighter crews were called at the scene.

For public safety, drivers must pull over and slow down when emergency vehicles, such as fire trucks, with lights are activated. The "Move Over Law," mandates when drivers on the roads hear and see firetrucks rushing to a rescue mission, that drivers vacate the lane closest to the emergency vehicle or reduce speed to 20 mph below the posted limit if they cannot move over safely. Failure to comply can result in fines and penalties, emphasizing the importance of adhering to these laws to protect emergency responders to ensure public safety.

People need to give rescue crews space to fight fires and clean up debris caused by embers and spreading fires. Rushing to the scene to stand around in clouds of smoke to watch puts your own health and safety in jeopardy. When you're in the radius of smoke and fire, get out of the way and let firefighters do their job.

In case of fire, are your home and auto insurance policies adequately covered? Now is the time to check to make sure your insurance is paid up and you are covered.

Fire causes a great deal of damage, and quickly, it's a very scary thing to deal with.

Brian England - Yes! I have survived multiple property fires, including a hotel fire. It is very scary, emotionally, financially, and physically distressful. Time consumption to deal with claims while trying to work, go to school, raise a family, and deal with temporary housing is very hard on most people, children, including pets.

Good morning Patricia. I am appalled when I see people not moving over and yielding the lane to moving emergency vehicles but get even madder when they don't move over for emergency vehicles on the shoulder. Pure ignorance!! Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin - I hear your roar! Yesterday I was in a rural area driving home when I heard and saw fire trucks on the other side of the road. Between both coming and going traffic, there was only two lanes. I pulled over to let them pass. As the lead driver, all others behind me pulled over too - EXCEPT one! A truck driver with a long, long empty trailer from far back in the rear, decided to drive in the middle of the road to pass us all by. Mind you, there was no shoulder to pull over and to the right of where I stopped, was a deep culvert. That #%^! &% truck driver nearly blew my car down because the driver of the truck/trailer was going so fast! By that time, both dangerous driver and Multiple Firetrucks were not far apart.

Here drivers on both sides of the road pull over - I don't think it's the law but that's what happens.

Kat Palmiotti - Mandatory laws or not, that's the way it should be.

Thanks for your comment.

This is an important reminder on several levels. Fires like this highlight how quickly situations can escalate and why giving first responders space is critical for everyone’s safety. Your point about the Move Over Law and avoiding smoke exposure is well taken. It is also a timely nudge for homeowners to review their insurance coverage before an emergency, rather than after.

Gwen Fowler SC Lakes & Mountains 864-710-4518 - every time I hear a fire siren, I stop, pull over an say a little prayer for the firefighters and the people that need rescuing. You're so right, situations can change with the blowing of the wind! Giving the big trucks space to get to take care of the emergency is the right thing to do.

Guess where I was this morning? I had an appointment scheduled with my new and local insurance company to change insurance companies. The one I had was not meeting my needs and that scared me!

May you always be safe!

Patricia, this shows how rapidly conditions can worsen and underscore the importance of allowing emergency crews the room they need to do their jobs safely.

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 - When I saw the neighborhood photos posted early this morning, and saw all the neighbors were crying with comments, I stayed put and did the next best thing. I sounded my alarms via ActiveRain!

Praise the Lord for Firefighters!!!

This is a good reminder to make sure our insurance coverage is up to date.

Roy Kelley - Thank you! An insurance policy is not something to pay; then stuff the papers in the drawer. It needs to be read and reviewed often, especially when amendments come in the mail or sent to our computers.

Fire can be devastating, not only the damage but the lingering smell afterwards can cause stress itself. Good to check your coverages.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 - Stress is contagious! And when there is smoke, there's fire! Smoke that lingers gets stuck in the lungs and air passageway. That in itself can be deadly, maybe not immediately but get enough smoke down in those lungs and it can ignite as quickly as a match inside our bodies.

Oh my goodness, Patricia. I do hope no one was actually hurt in these fires. We also follow this kind of rule here in Charlotte... we pull over and totally stop until the trucks drive past us. Yes, my insurance is up to date.

Nina Hollander, Broker - I'm sure lots of people in Flower Mound are still wondering and asking questions. Who? What' When? Where? Why! I learned as a little girl driving in the cars my father drove, to be respectful when you see and hear firefighters' alarms and bright lights. He also repeated the same thing - never follow a firefighter. Stay out of their way. Don't be nosy! As a reminder, he stressed a point. Curiosity killed the cat!

Patricia Feager Great reminder to review coverage. Moments like this highlight how critical proper insurance protection is.

Lise Howe - I learned to read my insurance policies the hard way after my house fire on Martin Luther King's Day in 1994. I'll tell you, being stressed and in shock to see your house in flames, doesn't make anything easier. For one thing, back then, my policy was in the house while it was burning and so were my records and important documentation.

Gloria Todor - me too! I sold a lot of houses in the Westchester neighborhood. It's very close to where I live. Most of the houses were one stories. Many of those neighbors were retired. Some were grandma's who kept their grandkids overnight while their parents worked. It will be hard on those that had a loss.

Patricia the minute I spot a fire truck, police car, or ambulance with their lights on, I pull over to the side of the road and come to a stop right away.  There is a reason why their lights are on, and I do not want to be the cause of slowing them down.

George Souto - Me too! It is what I learned from my father and what I taught my kids too. People who get in the way of a fire department's work should be fined and do community service.

Hi Patricia-- I fear fires more than hurricanes or tornadoes. Our friends home burned down years ago when we were in FL. Thankfully, no one was hurt. And yes, move over and allow emergency vehicles to pass and if you are passing an emergency vehicle, slow down and give them a wide berth.

Feb 09, 2026 06:50 PM

Kathy Streib - you are not alone. I've experienced multiple fires and Hurricane Bob. Both were scary. Although it would be inconvenient to me and many others, I think we are at a point in history where when you get a new license or renew your license, take a Driver's Ed class before being licensed.

May you always be safe and happy too! Thanks for letting me know you like my new head shot!

So sorry to know that people will be displaced from their homes due to tragedy. You bring up a good point about homeowner's insurance, Patricia. We were recently cancelled by Allstate and had to find another company to carry us. Had we experienced a catastrophe during that time, the insurance amount wouldn't equate to even 1/4 of the cost to replace! We updated to today's standards with the new insurance company, thankfully.

Wanda Kubat-Nerdin - Wanda Can! - after living through multiple fires, it is an emotional, financial, and physically very stressful. Your memory is tested. You may not have clothing, papers, receipts, insurance policies, and all the contact numbers you need on hand in an emergency. If you have pets, they may not be allowed for long duration for liability reasons for Staff and other guests at hotels. Not everyone has relatives or people who will take you in for an unknown period of time, with kids, and pets. When it came to the Inventory List, the insurance company wants receipts (then depreciates) and pictures. If you don't have proof, tough luck. That has been my experience.

I just changed Insurance Companies and discussed this point about receipts, photo and/or videos, including and replacement costs and nothing has really changed. I lost more and forgot about a lot of stuff I had at the time I went through it with my kids and pets.
