The Truth About My Entrepreneurial Journey

By
Real Estate Agent with Avery's Design

I’ve been on this entrepreneurial journey for six years now, and when I think back to where it all started, I can still feel that early spark. I was hopeful, starry‑eyed, and convinced I had finally found my purpose. It happened by accident, during an architecture program at my local community college. Somewhere between drafting tables and design theory, I stumbled into graphic design — and everything changed. I didn’t just enjoy it. I felt pulled toward it. That pull eventually led me into brand strategy and brand identity design, long before I even knew what those words meant.

There was no one locally who could teach me. No mentors. No guidance. No roadmap. So I did what most entrepreneurs eventually do: I bet on myself. I spent thousands of dollars learning branding online, studying obsessively, reading every book I could find, and teaching myself everything I needed to know. I told myself this was it — this was the thing I would dedicate my life to. I promised myself I would never go back to working for someone else, never settle for a life that didn’t feel like mine, never let my dreams die quietly in the background while I worked for someone else’s vision.

Working minimum‑wage jobs only made that promise stronger. Those jobs were soul‑crushing. They drained me in ways I still struggle to explain. Every shift felt like a reminder of the life I refused to accept — a life where I was replaceable, underpaid, and unfulfilled. I knew I wanted more. I knew I was capable of more. And I knew that if I didn’t take control of my own future, no one else would.

Entrepreneurship, though, is not the romanticized dream people imagine. It’s a lonely road. Even though millions of people call themselves entrepreneurs, the journey itself feels isolating. Everyone around you — parents, friends, teachers, mentors — tells you to follow the “safe” path. Go to school. Get a degree. Work for someone. Climb the ladder. Buy a house by a certain age. Start a family by a certain age. Retire at the end of it all. It’s like the world hands you a script and expects you to follow it without question.

But when I looked into that future, I didn’t see happiness. I saw a version of myself who had given up on his dreams. A version who lived paycheck to paycheck, trapped in a job he hated but couldn’t leave. A version who did everything “right” and still felt empty. That terrified me more than failure ever could.

I’ve always been the rebellious type. People told me it would ruin me, that sometimes you just have to accept things as they are. But I couldn’t. I refused to bow my head and follow a path that didn’t belong to me. I wanted more from life — more meaning, more freedom, more purpose. That’s why I became an entrepreneur. That’s why I chose the hard road. I would rather struggle on my own terms than live a life of regret wondering what could have been.

And here’s the part most entrepreneurs eventually realize: when you’re building something from nothing, your brand becomes an extension of your identity. It’s not just a logo or a color palette. It’s your story. Your rebellion. Your refusal to settle. Your declaration that you’re building a life on your own terms. That’s why so many founders eventually look for a brand designer who understands entrepreneurs — someone who knows what it feels like to fight for a dream, someone who knows the weight of ambition, someone who can translate that fire into a brand that actually reflects who they are.

Entrepreneurs don’t need generic branding. They need branding that carries their story, their purpose, their grit. They need branding that builds trust, attracts the right people, and positions them as the leader they’re becoming. They need branding that feels like them — not like a template. When a founder searches for a brand identity designer for entrepreneurs, or a logo designer who understands startups, what they’re really looking for is someone who understands the emotional weight behind their journey. Someone who can take everything they’ve lived through and turn it into a brand that communicates strength, clarity, and intention.

People often ask, “What if I fail?” But I’ve learned that the real question — the one that keeps entrepreneurs awake at night — is “What if I succeed?” Failure is temporary. Regret is permanent. I’d rather take the risk, take the hits, take the lonely nights, than look back decades from now and wonder what my life could have been if I had just tried.

That’s the truth of entrepreneurship. It’s messy, painful, beautiful, and transformative. And if you’re on this journey too, you deserve a brand that reflects the magnitude of what you’re building. You deserve a brand identity that feels like your story, your ambition, your purpose. You deserve a designer who understands what it means to build something from nothing — because they’ve lived it too.

If you’re an entrepreneur building something meaningful and you want a brand that finally matches the scale of your vision, I’m here to help you create it. Contact Us

Hi Avery,

The moment when you decided to trust yourself was critical. That is the turning point for every entrepreneur.

Anyone can learn skills. Not everyone has the courage to bet on themselves. That courage is what gives your work meaning and ultimately draws the right people to you.

Your post reminded me of how I sign my book, The ABCs of Life: Letters to My Granddaughter:
  Dream Big,
  Believe In Yourself
  And Never Stop Learning

You really summed it up well, great job, I hope you get many requests for help from this post. Keep at it, most entrepreneurs mention how lonely it is, which is why so many create or join mastermind groups to learn what they don't know and develop friendships with others who understand their journey.
