Thankful Thursdays…For The People We Don’t Know

Throughout the extremely cold weather we had in Houston recently, Larry and I continued our morning walks. We bundled up with neck scarves and beanies, gloves and hand warmers (don’t laugh…we’re not used to temps in the 20s) and headed out to Kickerillo.

There were only a handful of us hearty souls out there. I realized that I missed our regular walking “friends.”

Larry and I know the names of many of the walkers, but beyond that, we don’t even know their last names. And yet, when we haven’t seen JB in several days, we worry. JB is in his upper 80s and walks most mornings. He says “hello” to everyone, and everyone knows him. In fact, he remembers everyone’s name!

Calvin always has a smile on his face and, in his deep voice, wishes us a Good Morning. I “met” Angelica and Elaine this year; Annie, who has more energy than anyone should have at 7 am; and Steven, who “trains” every morning by wearing a backpack loaded with…I have no idea!

And, my favorite cashier at H-E-B, Kimberlee, who always says “Hello, friend!”  and Josh, the Seafood department manager, who always shouts out “Hey friend” and suggests which fish to buy.

We have our friends, neighbors, and family members we call on for lunch or dinner or to hang out.

But I would miss seeing the people I don’t know who make me smile every day…who bring me joy…and who have become a part of my world.

We need people in our lives, even if only to say “good morning” to or wave and say “have a nice day.”

Everyone you meet knows something you don't know but need to know. Learn from them.

Good morning Kathy. The unknown author who uttered the words "A friend may be waiting behind a stranger's face" was one smart cookie. I have had many casual acquaintances over the years and never knew their last name, friends just the same. Enjoy your day.

I agree Wayne Martin We wonder what happens when someone we're used to seeing almost every day, suddenly isn"t there. Did they move?

I love this Kathy Streib !  I have a favorite bike path we frequent on warmer days where we see our ‘friends’, then there’s our frequent restaurants where we ask for our favorite waiter friends (Kenny, Sarah, Amy & Andre), then there’s Lou my bank teller friend and, of course, Pam our grocery cashier who always says ‘oh good you brought your bags’.

Hi Kelly McGovern that's it exactly. When we were in Delray Beach, there was a beautiful young woman who was an agent. As a hobby, she did ballroom dancing. Often when she walked, she practiced her dance movements. I knew her name but very little else.

I see many of the same people every day, and we don't even know each other, but perhaps one day one of us will talk to the other and begin getting to know each other, haha.

I was wondering where the title was going to take us and I like the answer. Yes, familiar faces smiling at us are missed when they are gone. Good for you for taking the time to get to know first names and continuing to greet people!

Kat Palmiotti I have a "cheat sheet" on my phone. When I learn someone's name, I'll add it to my list with a short comment or clue so I can remember who they are.

Good morning, Kathy. I loved this post and message. Our lives are so much enriched by all kinds of friends and connections and you are proof of that.

Thank you Nina Hollander, Broker  When I was younger and working in an office, I couldn't go anywhere in Houston that I didn't run into someone I knew. Now since we've been gone and don't work in an office, we've found ways to make up for it. Besides our family and friends, these daily treasures bring smiles to our faces.

Hi Kathy,
I find it fascinating when I strike up a conversation with a stranger, how often we have something or someone we know in common.   I like the CG Jung quote.

Carol Williams there was a woman who worked for me. She and her husband only formed relationships with people whom they felt could help their professional lives. They missed out on so much.

We are not meant to live alone, even when we are just 1. Having a friendly smile returned can make the day better.

Ed Silva, 203-206-0754 I agree!!!   If you think about it, this is why when you're out shopping, often it's the older person who is by themsleves how strikes up conversations with others.

What a beautiful sentiment, Kathy. It’s so true that these 'familiar strangers'—like JB or Kimberlee at H-E-B—weave a special kind of fabric into our daily lives. Your post is a wonderful reminder to appreciate those small, consistent connections that bring us joy and community, even when we don't know the full story behind the smile. Stay warm on those morning walks!

Kathy Streib The day I chose to take a walk was way too cold, even though it was one of the warmer days. Plus, my windshield wiper snapped off while I was cleaning my car. I also cleaned off my neighbor's, as he has oxygen . The temps with wind chill were -8 .. Too cold for me even though I was bundeled up , It is warm now 34 degrees

Yikes Hannah Williams that is too cold for anyone to be out!!! That was kind of you to clean off your neighbor's windshield.

I love the message in your post, Kathy. Connections come in all sorts of places and you just never know when making one where it could lead, if nothing other than a casual friendship. Saying hello or good morning is easy to do and can brighten someone's day.

I love that you know so many of their names! We see some people regularly (not so much in the winter though) on our walks and don't know any of their names. We always wave and say hello to each other but have never had a conversation really.

When we are away with the RV staying at places for a week at a time we do get into conversations sometimes with other campers but even then no names are exchanged.

What a sweet reminder of how these small everyday connections can brighten a day, Kathy Streib. Your stories made me smile, and they nudged me to notice the folks who add a little spark to my own routine. It’s funny how people we barely know can still feel like part of our circle :)
