Thankful Thursdays…For The People We Don’t Know
Throughout the extremely cold weather we had in Houston recently, Larry and I continued our morning walks. We bundled up with neck scarves and beanies, gloves and hand warmers (don’t laugh…we’re not used to temps in the 20s) and headed out to Kickerillo.
There were only a handful of us hearty souls out there. I realized that I missed our regular walking “friends.”

Larry and I know the names of many of the walkers, but beyond that, we don’t even know their last names. And yet, when we haven’t seen JB in several days, we worry. JB is in his upper 80s and walks most mornings. He says “hello” to everyone, and everyone knows him. In fact, he remembers everyone’s name!
Calvin always has a smile on his face and, in his deep voice, wishes us a Good Morning. I “met” Angelica and Elaine this year; Annie, who has more energy than anyone should have at 7 am; and Steven, who “trains” every morning by wearing a backpack loaded with…I have no idea!
And, my favorite cashier at H-E-B, Kimberlee, who always says “Hello, friend!” and Josh, the Seafood department manager, who always shouts out “Hey friend” and suggests which fish to buy.
We have our friends, neighbors, and family members we call on for lunch or dinner or to hang out.
But I would miss seeing the people I don’t know who make me smile every day…who bring me joy…and who have become a part of my world.
We need people in our lives, even if only to say “good morning” to or wave and say “have a nice day.”

Everyone you meet knows something you don't know but need to know. Learn from them.
