Pickleball - A story of betrayal and healing

By

As many of you know, I’ve been playing Pickleball since before it was cool (roughly 2010).  The world has finally caught on.  After inviting my oldest brother to play at my neighborhood courts in Westover Park (League City, TX) for the last sixteen years, I woke up one day to find out that he had been secretly playing without me.

Wow. Just Wow.

If there is a silver lining, it's that the good people at his local gym had the burden of teaching him how to play.  I only offered to teach him thousands of times.  I will run him around the court until he apologizes.  Did you ever think you'd read a story of pickleball betrayal?  I'm taking it one day at a time.  It will be okay.  ;-)

[Photo includes Worrell Team agents, Keystone Realty Group Agents, my wife, kids,

and my mother-in-law! You will not see any photos of my oldest brother... yet.]

My kids are playing, too.  Maddie is a senior at the University of Colorado and has taken up some occaisonal Pickleball.  And at opening week of Chicken N Pickle, Gavin managed to go three times with his friends to eat, hang out, and play pickleball.  I got to play with Gavin as my partner in his very first pickleball tournament last year to raise money for Bay Area Turning Point.  And we got 2nd place with some insane competition!

UPDATE:  In the Fall of 2025, Gavin joined his sister as a freshman at the University of Colorado.  Perhaps they can find a good tournament at the University of Colorado soon!

Chicken N Pickle is one of the newest and coolest businesses to come to our area.  It is part of a larger development called Flyway in Webster, TX.  Flyway is an 80+ acre development next to Top Golf in Webster, featuring Great Wolf Lodge, along with many other shopping and dining options.  Visitors will be able to purchase drinks from any establishment and enjoy them while walking the scenic boardwalk.  Newest restaurants to open include Vida Mariscos and Chicken N Pickle…. Coming soon are Ale & Ivy, Ambriza, and Gauchos.

Chicken N Pickle offers an extremely fun and relaxed social environment to eat, drink, watch sports, play cornhole, or try out Pickleball.  It's a great place for family, work events, networking and fun!

Everybody is doing it!!  Who is ready?

Hit me up with a text and let’s go play or grab a bite to eat!

I have not yet played pickleball but keep meaning to check out my area's website for lessons/etc. As for your brother, well, sibling behaviors don't always make sense!

So true!  If you're ever down in Houston (hopefully not in the summer - being near Glacier would be preferred), I'd be glad to give you the intro!

Hi Brian- we went to a Chicken and Pickle when we were in Lenexa KS this summer. It looks like fun!   I wonder if your brother took lessons on his own for the same reasons why we'd rather have anyone else but our parents teach us to drive! LOl

You should mention pickleball to Brian England

Kathy Streib you know #NoPickleballForBrian, even though I enjoy watching Ray Henson play, haha.  Since my pickleball days may never exist, I shall live them vicariously through Ray, while I am busy on the tennis courts, haha.
