Fun Fact Friday: The ActiveRain Tribe

By
Education & Training with Although I'm retired, I enjoy sharing my knowledge and learning from other real estate industry professionals.

“A tribe is not defined by geography, but by the bonds that hold it together.”

Did you know...
The Navajo Nation is the largest Native American tribe in the United States, with nearly 400,000 members and a land base of about 25,000 square miles across Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah.

That number caught my attention, and I got curious about how that compared to our ActiveRain Tribe.

ActiveRain currently has 309,250 members (as of Friday, 5/58/2026 when I compiled this post). It is slightly larger now.

That means our online real estate “tribe” is nearly as large as the largest Native American nation in the United States.

The Navajo Nation is bound by land, language, culture, and history. We at ActiveRain are bound by something different. A shared profession. Shared challenges. Shared knowledge and shared encouragement.

Membership numbers are impressive. Engagement is what makes it powerful.

Over 309,000 members. That is not just a website. That is a nation-sized community.  Now, if we could just get more people to actively engage and enjoy the full value of ActiveRain.

Note: This post was scheduled before the June Challenge, hosted by Debe Maxwell, CRS and Lew Corcoran was revealed.

Carol Williams   Good morning, Carol, I can recall a time, when we had a third of the members but one had to scroll many a page on the blog roll to find members followed, and one could spend hours reading and commenting on posts.

Now it is down to maybe 5 pages of 20 posts a day and many are just repetitious weekly market reports.

Hi Ed Silva, 203-206-0754
We are welcoming new members every day, yet only occasionally do any of them choose to reply or interact. If they only knew what they are missing.

This is the real challenge "Now, if we could just get more people to actively engage and enjoy the full value of ActiveRain." I totally agree.

We welcome new members every day. How do we get them to understand what they're missing?

Good morning Carol. Our active participant here, Kat Palmiotti, used your quote well. Kudos to you for your Saturday post which introduces new members, encourages their participation here and offers sage advice for them to enjoy the experience May the new members stay active and allow our tribe to become stronger.

Good Friday morning, Carol. Thanks for this comparison.

Sadly, the ActiveRain tribe numbers include dead and inactive members.

That is true, but it's a rather small number. There is a vast number of living members who are missing out on all the benefits.

Good morning, Carol... interesting approach and comparison. At the end of the day, the real message is this: "Now, if we could just get more people to actively engage and enjoy the full value of ActiveRain."  I'm not sure we have even 500 active members.

I agree with Nina Hollander, Broker that Carol Williams' comment cracked me up as well.

Hi Nina Hollander, Broker
500 sounds like a stretch to me, which is sad. I think a lot of the tribe must be sitting in their teepees smoking a peace pipe.

Carol Williams you cracked me up with that comment. I knew I was being "generous" with the 500 estimate.

That is quite a large number, and if even a quarter of the membership were actually active, that would be quite something, haha.

Hi Brian England
If we had even 1% that are truly active that would be over 3,000.

That would lead to some amazing connections Carol Williams

Hello, Miss Carol Williams  - reading those numbers brings to mind the California voter rolls. Ballots are sent to dead people (I mean no disrespect) and people who moved from the state 10 years ago.

What do the numbers mean?
How many people are truly active?

Jun 05, 2026 08:47 AM
Leanne Smith

We can only control our own actions, possibly influence other as Carol did in this post and let go of the rest.  Those who are not active are losing incredible opportunities.

Truly Active? Not nearly enough, but we are here and that matters!

Hi Carol:

What a fun comparison. The ActiveRain numbers have certainly shifted over the years. Seems to me that when you, I and George Souto joined in September 2006 the membership was under 1000.

AR has so much value. I just wish the new members (and the majority of existing members) understood that.

Carol interesting comparison.  Since I live in AZ I'm familiar with the Navajo Tribe and what great people they are.As for getting new members to participate and network......beats me.  We've been trying for years.  They don't seem to get the value of building relationships and networking all all that can create - which as we know is amazing!

They sign up but do nothing. What's the point in that? 🤔

Hi Carol! What a wonderful comparison! We are very 'tribe-like' and I love that about AR. I also wish we could get more engagement out of the rest of the tribe! How funny that you wrote this before our challenge announcement!!

Hi Debe Maxwell, CRS
I was thinking we should put some kind of presentation together to get inactive members to truly understand the value of what they are missing. I have no idea how to do that, but I give it some thought.

I love this post..what a great analogy! I loved the term tribe.....it is true Active Rain is a tribe and I too wish more we had more participation.

Carol, Times have changed since the early days of the Rain. Today people have become wary of the surveillance state profiling, targeting, hacking individuals and worse, which prevents active engagement on social media. TargetedJustice was formed to call attention to the plight of some 300,000 Americans on illegal government blacklists without their knowledge or consent.

When a DDOS attack hit my internet, all the following happened within days: FB pages became unnavigatable; Jack Dorsey's Twitter emailed that my account was attacking their server, LinkedIn shut down my hosted group, Friends of Bill Binney and Karen Melton Stewart (2 former NSA'S with years of exemplary service blacklisted); a fraudulent Craigslst account opened with my phone number; an email account with all client contacts was hacked and spammed, and much more. A service that monitors breaches of personal data, found 350 breaches of my data.

We have work to do to restore individual and privacy rights in the country so that people can return to sharing freely online.

They keep signing up, but don't engage. What's the point in that?

Carol, I love the comparison between the Navajo Nation and the ActiveRain community. You are so right that the real value is not just in the number of members, but in the engagement, encouragement, and shared knowledge that happens here.
