For Some Things There are No Substitutes.

I'd like to say that I am "thrifty" but the truth is that I'm down right cheap. My "thriftiness" often (very often) has me purchasing less quality items than the original (best) product available. Two items I refuse to compromise on are my faith and my health.

At the grocery store I do (my wife does) purchase a lot of generic (brand X) products except when it comes to meat. We like to purchase meat that has country of origin labeling if possible and like the photo above we do not buy fake meat (except mock crab).

Real Estate Application

There are many examples of the advantage of using original products and services in Real Estate.

Starting with services: A licensed Real Estate agent is far better than working with a FSBO (for sale by owner) or relying on a friend or family member for advice. Realtors are not lawyers but they are far more aware of your legal rights than most others.

A professional Home Inspector knows what to look for more than a friend or relative that knows something about construction.

A well know local lender is better than an internet lender that no one has heard of. With a local lender you can stop by and visit with them when you have questions or run into a time of hardship.

I am sure there are many more good examples but for now my point is keep it local and use competent professionals.

One further point. Certain substitutions can be very hazardous. In a recent conversation with an insurance professional she told me how certain products, like plastic decking and flooring give off highly toxic chemicals in a fire and will cause the entire home to be "totalled". In the case she mentioned the deck caught fire from a grill mishap and although the fire was totally outside the home some of the smoke entered the home and those toxic fumes totalled out the entire home.

Do you enjoy the cartoons written by my son (Timmothy N. Timm) which I use as a springboard to write my daily posts? His strip, Titus & Philemon, has run in two newspapers for years as well as being printed in my blog every day. Titus & Philemon (pronounced Phi - Lee -Man) are guinea pigs. Their owner is Joe. Timmothy has never repeated a joke/comic strip in the 12 years he has been writing it. He has never copied another strip, such as Peanuts or Garfield. You can follow Timmothy on FB as Titus & Philemon and you can also check him out on Instagram as Instagram.com/titus and philemon/ .For Timmothy's website type timmtimmothy.com into your browser. I tried to put it in a link here but it refuses to work. Do NOT put anything in front of timmtimmothy.com or it will not work.

We have had a wonderful "false Spring" all of February this year Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty but they are saying it's coming to an end starting tomorrow night at midnight. That is when a winter storm is to come in and knock out the 40's we have been enjoying down to single digit temps and a bunch of snow. I can't complain tho as that would be close to normal.

I saw your comment to Jeffrey and we're supposed to have some winter weather (finally) starting tomorrow morning. We shall see!

Kat Palmiotti it's going to be hard to go back to normal here. I understand the joy that some moisture is headed your way as you need it badly. It's never a good thing when a forest area is too dry.

Good morning, Bob... my mother raised me with the philosophy of quality over quantity in all aspects of life. And that's how I've lived my entire life. At the end of the day, in most cases you do get what you pay for.

You had a wise mother Nina Hollander, Broker and my mom probably was in line with yours. Where I went arey is when I purchased a home at such an early age I was forced to "make do" with very little resourses.

Love the caricature Debe Maxwell, CRS created for you! I'm with Nina Hollander, Broker quality over quantity is my motto and has served me well. I've learned you get what you pay for!

The RIGHT CHARLOTTE REALTOR!

Hi Bob! I've always waited to purchase quality things instead of going the cheaper route. Sometimes the best things ARE the lowest price but, that is rare and when that happens, I think I'm the thriftiest person in the world! LOL

Debe Maxwell, CRS there are times were inexpensive works too, such as when I buy a tool I will seldom use but it is still a better option than renting the tool.

Expert guidance. Exceptional results.

That was a fun read, Bob "RealMan" Timm. And the way you tied everyday choices to real estate hit with a grin and a nod. The reminder to stick with trusted pros and solid materials lands well, especially with that wild story about the deck fire. Thanks for sharing something that’s both practical and a little eye opening.

Thank you Lew Corcoran for the kind comments. The thing about the deck fire is that it was outside yet the insurance company felt that they would be liable if they let the insured back in and later experience ill effects. When you burn plastic, you're releasing toxic gases that can mess up your health and the environment. These fumes can lead to respiratory problems, increase cancer risk, and even mess with your reproductive health.

Hi Bob,
Your post reminded me of one of my favorite quotes, and this holds true for hiring a real estate agent as well:
"The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of a low price is forgotten".
