A Story That Will Drive You Buggy

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Ward County Notary Services 607851

On occasion I will read or participate on a blog that is part of the "Notary Cafe". I came across a story I thought some of us may identify with when it comes to a Real Estate nightmare. My thanks to Gary F of takenotenotaryservices for his story. This is Gary's story Not mine.

My last signing for 2025 was a sellers in my city. Simple 24 page packet, sign scan, drop, no problem. Or it should have been. I arrived at the house and the people were loading up their car to move out. The lady said I am embarrassed to take you in the house. I played it off and said it will be ok. After about 10 minutes and a few pages into the signing I realized it wouldn’t be ok. They had no table to sign at so we used a sofa table and made it work. The not ok part came when I noticed bugs on the table we were signing at and I would shew them away. Then they started dropping from the walls or ceiling and a few even exploded on the papers we were signing. I powered through the signing and got out of there as soon as I could. I got home scanned and uploaded thinking this nightmare was over, but it wasn’t. I pushed back from my desk and noticed one of those bugs crawling out of the cuff on my pants, then another one, and another one. I killed them, and immediately took all my clothes and threw them into the wash on hot water and washed them. Then I took one of the dead soldiers and did a google scan, and it turned out they were likely BED BUGS! So I then had to empty my briefcase into two air tight containers that I had near my washer to quarantine everything for at least three days in case there were any bugs or eggs on my stuff. I have had to treat the entire house and can’t work until I can get my stuff out of quarantine and clean it. I will end up throwing away most of it with the exception of my stamp just to be on the safe side. Needless to say, this signing cost me money. The worst part is after the fact, I realized through some of the conversation that I heard between her and her husband that they probably knew about it. I heard her telling him that when we were done they would go get him new clothes, and throw his away, before going to there hotel. Not only is it disgusting, but frustrating when people willfully put us in a position to compromise our health and safety or worse, bring things like this home to our families. Thankfully I haven’t seen any of them in our home, so my prayer is that they were contained to my clothes and my bag. I hope 2026 starts out better than 2025 ended.

Do you enjoy the cartoons written by my son (Timmothy N. Timm) which I use as a springboard to write my daily posts? His strip, Titus & Philemon, has run in two newspapers for years as well as being printed in my blog every day. Titus & Philemon (pronounced Phi - Lee -Man) are guinea pigs. Their owner is Joe. Timmothy has never repeated a joke/comic strip in the 12 years he has been writing it. He has never copied another strip, such as Peanuts or Garfield. You can follow Timmothy on FB as Titus & Philemon and you can also check him out on Instagram as Instagram.com/titus and philemon/ .For Timmothy's website type timmtimmothy.com into your browser. I tried to put it in a link here but it refuses to work. Do NOT put anything in front of timmtimmothy.com or it will not work.

That would be horrible.  I am not a real estate agent, so I am asking this because I don't know.  Could the signinghave  been held off until the owners took care of the bug problem?

The problem Candy Stevens, EA was that the Signers did not reveal the problem until the Notary saw the problem for himself. The Signers should have arranged to meet somewhere else fo sure.

Bob "RealMan" Timm that is a horrible experience.  I would have sent these people an invoice for everything you had to do to get rid of the bugs.

On a more pleasant note, I like the new photo!

Thank you George Souto . The new profile pick is compliments of Debe Maxwell, CRS

As far as the bugs, that wasn't me, I gave credit to the Notary blogger that posted it at The Notary Cafe.

OMG, Bob, that's terrible, and unforgiveable on their part. Too bad you don't have a way to recover some of your losses!

Home again, home again...

They definitely should have warned you and offered you the option of signing outside of the home.  (and NOT in your car!!)

It wasn't my story Alan May but I agree with you completely. They should have headed to Starbucks.

My mistake... right... they should have gone to some neutral picnic table. (not sure I would have even wanted to expose a local Starbucks).

Bob "RealMan" Timm eww how horrible -- Oh, how dreadful! Just thinking about it makes me feel itchy and crawly—those bugs are truly horrendous! I remember a time years ago when I was showing houses, and I encountered a dog that was absolutely infested with fleas. When I got home, I had to strip off all my clothes, toss them into the wash, and I couldn't stop scratching! Meanwhile, the buyers were in fits of laughter. It was both an unforgettable and comically horrifying experience!

I can't imagine why the Buyers thought it was funny Hannah Williams . I've only encountered fleas once and it caused me to panic. I put my dog in the bath tub and washed him with ammonia which wasn't to healthy either but it did kill the fleas and we never had them again.

Bob "RealMan" Timm - That story really bugged me! I feel itchy just thinking about it. There are many risks taken when taking care of real estate business. I wonder if they had a Pest Inspector, in addition to a Home Inspector. Those ugly bugs could do a lot of structural damage to a home too. Right now, my skin is crawling. I think I'll take a shower to feel clean and thankful I did have to experience it.

But the expense to you! The cost, the creepy feelings, and the time it takes to quarantine your stuff, and get your clothes and shoes cleaned is totally unacceptable. I would have given them a bill and expect payment.

Patricia Feager that wasn't my story BUT as a landlord during the oil boom a lot of scoundrels brought the bugs in. I had a three plex and I rented to two sisters who turned out to be hoes. Lucky for me I had an old furnace that could/would run no matter what the temp. It was during the summer and I had evicted everyone. Lucky for me it was a July day in the 90's so I cranked up the furnace and cooked the bugs. I think I had to keep it up for an hour but it worked like a charm.

That's horrible.  I have had occasions when I had to get the bombs and double up on them while I found someplace to stay for a couple of days.

I did not find out until I evicted them and I was really lucky not to bring the bugs home as I handled the furniture the renters left behind when I threw it out Ed Silva, 203-206-0754 . I dodged a bullet on that one.

HI Bob- there is just too much of an ICK factor in this story. Ugh...I would have screamed so loud you could hear me in Minot if I came home with those.

Why the people were not up front with the Notary is what I don't understand Kathy Streib . I'm sure they were embarrassed but that is no excuse.

Bob "RealMan" Timm eeeew, Bob! What a disgusting situation. Fortunately, I've never had anything like bugs "attack" me, but I did once almost walk into a condo in NY City that had black mold growing from the walls onto the marble flooring. And the seller wanted us to take our shoes off. Say what!?! I just made my excuses to the seller and got my clients out of there asap.

Ugh, that sounds like a really bad situation, and I hope that I never have to deal with bed bugs.  I am glad to hear that they haven't shown up at your home, and I hope that they never will.

This was not my story Brian England as I gave credit to Gary F who posted the story at the Notary Cafe. That being said I did have to deal with bedbugs at a rental I did own. It was no fun.
