Wordless Wednesday…A Murder Most FOWL

We had a bit of a conundrum last Friday at the Streib aviaryBNB.

Mama bluebird built her nest, and Larry and I’ve been waiting for the first egg. We returned from our walk, turned on the nestbox camera and…Yea!! AN EGG!

We were ecstatic!  I took a snapshot, but it was dark, so Larry adjusted the camera that's mounted at the top of the box.

OOPS!

Where did the egg go?

With a puzzled look, Larry said…There’s no egg in the box!

What???? I double checked my app to make sure I wasn’t looking at a pic from another year. Nope…everything was working correctly.

In less than 10 minutes, something happened to the egg!!!

After some head-scratching and some “Are you kidding me!”  we concluded that an invasive English sparrow had swooped in and snatched the egg.

English sparrows are not only invasive but also aggressive, and they have been known to kill bluebirds, their hatchlings, and eggs. They will do anything to take over the nest box.

We try to scare the sparrows when we see them, but we do not offer 24-hour BBBox security.

After some research, I learned that we had to install a Sparrow SpooKer immediately if we wanted to keep any additional eggs safe. So Larry cobbled together this:

I had mylar bag filler for gift bags that Larry glued to a strip of foil. We hung it from a bar about the bluebird box.

The shiny streamers are supposed to keep the sparrows away, and so far they have. So far, Mama has laid 3 more eggs. Broods usually have 4 to 5 eggs; however, Mama bluebird (in her mind) has already laid 4 eggs.

Mother Nature never fails to intrigue, teach, and surprise us!

Hmm, maybe someone or something saw the camera and figured that there must be something worth snatching in there, haha.

Brian England those sparrows are pesky. They have been known to grab a bird out of the box just to kill it so they can use the box.

How interesting! I just looked up whether we have that kind of sparrow here and we do. We also have bluebirds so I guess this happens here too!

Kat Palmiotti I suppose it's the circle of life, but the English sparrows are not protected here because they are an invasive bird.   She laid another egg today!!!

Hi Kathy,
I love that you and Larry watch your AviaryBNB so closely and take creative action to protect the eggs.

Carol Williams did I tell you that in 2021 during our freeze and snow, there were eggs in the box. Larry went out every 4 hours and placed handwarmers under the nest.

That is awesome. I guess I figure it is just natures way of culling the heard....and the blue jays had a good year in 2025 (they almost won the World Series).

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty I'm ready for baseball!!!   bTW, bluejays are more cautious. They'll squawk for a peanut and often I see them hopping down from the upper branches but they want you walking away before they retrieve the peanut we throw.

Kathy I would expect nests to be invaded by other animals like squirrels, so I am surprised that other birds invade other birds nests.

George Souto you're right, other animals will invade the next. We have a baffle on the pole that prevents squirrels and other small 4-legged critters from climbing up.

I am glad you worked it out, those pesky English sparrows probably still think this is part of the Empire and they can have the run of the roost.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 I wouldn't mind them if they didn't hurt the eggs or birs.

This made me sad.  I can only imagine how you felt after waiting so long for an egg to arrive.  Poor mother bird!

Candy Stevens, EA It really is sad. However, and unfortunately, we see a lot of Mother Nature's other side. In FL we say a large egret swoop down and grab a baby moorhen. Nothing we could do!!!

Kathy, I would be scratching my head too, and you two came up with some pretty unique ways to keep those aggressive sparrows from the eggs.  Hope it works!

Hi Joan Cox, Retired Broker/Owner it's worked so far!!!  She laid one more egg today.

So sad but not to the extent that mama bluebird didn't finish the nesting part.

Ed Silva, 203-206-0754 She laid one more egg today. They usually are near the nest watching out for predators. They used to dive bomb Larry but I think they realize that he's the one who puts out mealworms for them.
