Turo

If you love to travel and you rent cars, it can get expensive.  An alternative to the big rental car companies entered the scene.  Turo is an American private peer-to-peer car rental service.

Yes, you can add your car to the rental pool and make money renting your car.  Some people have even made a business of it.  They have purchased 5 or 10 vehicles or more and added them to the rental pool.

Sometimes you rent a car that is old, but it’s cheap.  When you travel, you don’t always need to drive the top current year model vehicle.  I can drive a 5 or 10 year old car and save money.

Turo is generally considered:

  • “Affordable”
  • “Flexible”
  • “Great for unique vehicles”
  • “But less predictable than traditional rental companies”

Fast forward to today.

At one point, Turo was a good idea.  Not anymore.

And I will tell you I have gone 180° on Turo.  First good… now they are on my axis of evil.

They decided to give us a lifetime ban for absolutely no reason.  They in fact said, “We cannot tell you why.  And we will not change our decision.”

Lifetime Ban

WOW!!!  Ok, fine.  So, now we cannot rent a car from anyone on Turo. (Please feel free to ask about my extensive criminal background and my driving rap sheet.

Here it is: .  (

AND meanwhile we had 4-5 existing rental booking for our vehicle.  They closed our portal.  Allowed people to use our car.

  1. We couldn’t find it, communicate with the renters, or find out where they would leave our vehicle.  Is this Grand Theft Auto?
  2. Then they continued to rent it to another renters after telling us all bookings were canceled.
  3. Now someone is at the airport with no vehicle.  They have no way to contact us.  We can’t contact them.  And Turo calls us to ask why our car is not at the airport for them.
  4. I hear my wife in her 6th irate call with Turo.  They ask where is your car?  Why is it not available?  She says, “you had closed our account and won’t tell us why.  And we cannot help your customers since you blocked us from your platform.”

A guy with a great name…. Brian, is at the airport.  Had a car booked.  And is now completely screwed by Turo.  Turo has lost there way.  And will change die.

Turo blames the bad experiences on Host Cancellations.  I’m sure that happens sometimes.  But Turo absolutely sucks.  And can’t own their own issues.

Turo is now dead to me.

Who uses an alternative to Turo and what has your experience been?

Helping your Montana dreams take root

I'm sorry to hear about the issues you're having with Turo. I never heard of them and thought for sure they must not be in my area (NW Montana). So I checked out their website and saw that they DO have cars in my area that are available but they are 3 times the cost of a regular rental. Yikes!

So in my area, a regular rental with the major rental companies is a better bet.

That is good... I travel a fair amount.  Issues will arise no matter what you do, but we always try to have a good attitude.  The whole point of peer-to-peer rental cars is to save money.  So go with the big companies if they're cheaper for sure!

Brian, haven't ever heard of Turo, and when I went to Portugal in September, I rented from Sixt.  A lifetime ban without an explanation....wow.

Hi Joan, I'll check out Sixt.  Yeah, we were completely shocked.  If they told us we messed up, we would own it.  But, the way they told us we were banned and how they said they wouldn't tell us why or reverse their decision... it was certainly shocking.  I just felt bad for the guy stranded at the airport with no car to start of his trip.
