Ask An Ambassador: A Spark To Start

By

If my lawn mower is acting up, one of the things to check is the spark plug.  Small engines need fuel, air and ignition, and without a good spark plug that combustion triangle isn't going to be complete.

Blogging is much the same, there are different components that influence how easily we can create a post regularly.  There needs to be a willing blogger, a means to publish, and an idea.  If you're reading this, we're going to assume you're willing to post, and ActiveRain provides a means, so now all we need is an idea.

Where do post ideas come from?

Literally, EVERYWHERE, but you don't even have to leave this site to find sparks.

Now while I might not follow through on every idea I see or hear, there's no shortage of idea sparkplugs.

For example, this site's Q&A section offers ideas.

One particular question this weekend could have spun off multiple blog posts:

1.  Should you put your political views in your advertising?

2.  Can religion be part of your branding?

3.  What does your broker expect from you when blogging and advertising?

4.  Everything on the Internet is on your permanent record.

5.  You can say anything you want, but are you ready for the consequences?

6.  Should you pursue the entire consumer base, or just go for a fraction (assuming you're not violating Fair Housing).

And that's just from ONE question and the answers.

Need more ideas?
The monthly contests always offer ideas.  This month Lew Corcoran and Patricia Feager offer the opportunity to recognize your fellow members of ActiveRain.

Need other ideas?  Just cruise the blog roll.  Whether it's your favorite bloggers or someone you've just found, ideas are there.  Take the idea and make it your own.

You have open house, new listing, sold and market report type posts to choose from.

Niche bloggers?  Pick a niche, there's probably someone working it.

General thoughts on the industry?

Buyer tutorials, listing tips, loan info, that's here too.  Literally decades of material to explore.

Search for a topic.

Pick your favorite bloggers.

Explore the Groups.

The ideas are our there, take a look and grab your keyboard.

Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador if you need help,

Bill your list is a treasure trove of ideas. Thank you for the mention about the February 2026 - AR Member Appreciation Month.

This statement is most important: You can say anything you want, but are you ready for the consequences? What comes to mind is people will trust you less because relationships weaken. That, in of itself is a very serious consequence.

Thank you for being a guiding light on ActiveRain.

Good morning and this is all true. If someone wants to blog, there are tons of ideas out there, and in here.

When I blogged daily, the ideas were always there.  Some days finding an idea I WANTED to blog about that day was the challenge!

Bill and Liz, this is such a practical and encouraging post.

The spark plug analogy works well. Most agents are willing to blog and have access to the platform. What slows them down is waiting for the perfect idea. Your reminder that ideas are everywhere removes that excuse.

I especially like how you broke down one Q and A topic into multiple potential posts. That is exactly how consistent bloggers think. One conversation can become a week of content if you look at it from different angles.

The encouragement to explore contests, groups, and the blog roll is also valuable. There is a deep archive of experience on this site. Newer members sometimes forget they are surrounded by decades of insight.

The key takeaway is simple. Do not wait for inspiration to strike. Go looking for it. The spark is already there.

It really is everywhere.  I've had plenty of ideas sparked by clients, listening to the radio, watching a TV show, sporting events, reading a newspaper, etc.  Once we are attuned to picking up ideas, it's straight forward to take those ideas and fill our blog with posts.

The question from Candice A. Donofrio certainly could have inspired many blog posts from people sharing their own opinions on the topics you listed.

And that list was just top of mind from the question, there could have been more ideas if I'd reviewed more.

Hi Bill,

What you said about ideas being everywhere is so true. The irony is that many bloggers struggle not because ideas are scarce, but because they overlook the sparks right in front of them. Q&A is rich with ideas. I am visiting Anna and Gary for a few days, and as we talk, we're always saying, "There's another blog post idea".

For me, the real well of blogging fodder is curiosity.

Ideas are everywhere!

It is about 10:30 am on a really busy morning for me. I just got a chance to start reading through my favorite AR stuff. So much to think about here...I think my brain just exploded.

Hello Bill (and Liz too) - sometimes it happens and on occasion it can come across as a dud.  On this platform and in the real world.  💥🤯💥

There are a lot of ideas that didn't pan out stuck in my FOREVER DRAFT folder.  Just couldn't get a tone I liked, words not flowing, etc.  When that happens, I move on to another topic.

What a dynamic post filled with ideas for blogging.  I think there are ideas everywhere, too.  But making blogging a habit helps put a blogger's brain in the mode of being aware of those instances that occur.

Before covid when meetings, tours and classes where live, I had developed a system of note taking.  If a "spark" came to my brain about a blog idea from what I was hearing, I'd write a capital B next to that idea and circle the B.  Same thing for a  newsletter idea,  "N."  I stopped writing notes and switched to emailing myself from my phone.  Having to a tell an instructor in advance of a class that I take notes on my phone helped, but to others it looked like I was texting.  My point is, sometimes we have flittering thoughts about a blog idea,  at least I do!  If I don't acknowledge it immediately, that thought is gone amidst all of my other one-girl-band thoughts filled with files, buyers and sellers.  My system might not work for everyone else, but having a system of any kind might  help others?

Often the challenge is holding on to that idea.  I used to get a lot of ideas during the 20-30 minute commute to my engineering job, but remembering them all the way to a place I could jot it down meant sometimes POOF! with the idea!

Bill every time I thought I was running out of things to blog about, I would run across something that kicked started another series of blogs for me.  In fact most of the time I had 5 to 10 blogs sitting in draft just waiting to be posted.

I think many of us find the sparks here in the Rain.  Other posts, comments, Zoom meetings, etc., all great fodder for blogging ideas.
