What a gift it was to sit in the stands for Hudson’s last middle school basketball game of the season, the one game I was determined not to miss.
While I spent this season in Houston at MD Anderson Cancer Center for my cancer treatments, my heart was always with my grands. But this time, I was there in person, cheering loud and proud as Hudson took the court for the Murchison Matadors.

Hudson served as team captain and watching him walk to center court for the pre-game meeting was a moment I won’t forget. He met the opposing captain alongside the referees as they reviewed sportsmanship reminders, special rules, and confirmed the lineups. Then came the opening jump ball, both teams choosing a player to step into the center circle, the referee tossing the ball high into the air, and the two players leaping to tip it to a teammate.
Hudson took that responsibility seriously. Focused. Composed. Confident.
It wasn’t just the start of a game; it was leadership in action.
And what a game it was! The Matadors played hard and finished strong with a 31–23 victory, the perfect way to close out the season.

But perhaps the sweetest part for me was what was happening beyond the scoreboard. My son and one of his lifelong best friends, who grew up together, now live in the same Austin NW Hills community. Their boys, Hudson and his friend, are the same age, on the same team, and share that same easy friendship. Sitting there watching them, it felt like déjà vu. Years ago, I was in the stands cheering for their dads on their swim team. |
Life has a beautiful way of coming full circle.
From one generation to the next, friendships, teamwork, lessons, the leadership, it all continues.
And Nana was so very grateful to be there to see it.
Go Hudson!
