Ask An Ambassador: Not Every Point Is Equal

By

Some people in the Rain are all about that Point life.  Working to be #1 on the Leaderboard is a vital activity.  Blog, comment, reblog, follow, repeat the cycle every chance and maximize the point total.

Kat Palmiotti recently wrote a post about earning points in ActiveRain and the value of participation in the community.

To be blunt, HOW you earn your points probably matters far more than how many you have.

Points (at least after you reach 500,000 and get a free Rainmaker account) are by themselves of no value.  The only value they have is what we personally put on them and what other members of ActiveRain put on them.

And in that same vein, not every point gained is equal.

For instance, if someone copy/pastes 25 comments on 6 year old market reports  to max out their daily quota of comment points, I'd personally consider those points of no value.  It's faux participation in the community.

The most valuable points are those that are gained by activities that strengthen your community presence, your Internet visibility, build relationships, etc.

A sincere comment left may be the start of a friendship that will last decades.  Tell me that isn't worth far, far more than 25 points??

An evergreen blog post that attracts buyers and sellers and leads to commission checks for years and years?  I'd gladly skip the 225 points.

Sharing tips in the Rain may lead to others following you, and being top of mind when there's a referral for your market.

My personal opinion, being high on the Leaderboard isn't what motivates me to still participate all these years.  If someone wants to pass my spot, I'll pull over into the slow lane and let them zoom right on by :)   Don't get me wrong, I'm as competitive as anyone, but how I feel about points today is significantly different than my early years in the Rain.  I'd rather "sniff the flowers" of fewer posts and worry less about rushing to my next handful of points.

But, you do you, I'll do me.  It's ActiveRain, we each choose our own path and points.

Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador if you need help,

Hello Bill (and Liz too) - I admit I have wondered about the point you present in this post.

I know they all count the same in a total, but the way they're earned determines the relationships that extend beyond the community walls.

For me, being authentic with my comments is essential as I would hope others would do the same for my postings.  We learn so much from those authentic remarks and often these remarks begin to build trust and eventually relationships.

I sometimes wonder if the drive-by commenters realize just how much damage they do to themselves?

Personally, I put a high value on the comments that I get on my posts daily from those that I interact with, even when it is just to wish me a good day.  The connections that can be made from daily interaction are incredibly valuable, especially when referrals are made back and forth!

Brian, and I'll admit I'm not good about making the comment rounds.  The more furballs in our home, the less time I have to get out and about.  So when I do leave comments elsewhere, I try to make them legit.

Good morning and yes, you know I'll agree with this one! Points can be earned by all sorts of activities here, but the most valuable are the ones where real interaction occurs.

And thank you for mentioning my recent post!

I really appreciate this post.  I agree, everyone uses the points differently.  While I do appreciate people who comment on my posts, the comments that seem like they are copied and pasted irritate me, as I feel they only commented to get points.  The comment has nothing to do with what I write.  But I need to be grateful they commented I guess.

Generic drive by comments can no doubt be irritating.  A writer takes the time to create a post, you write something about taxes, and they congratulate you on your new listing!  Say whuuuuuttt?  Yeah, that's not the way to build a relationship here in the Rain!

Same.  I don't care.  Right now I'm posting a little more because I have a little more time.  And yes, i push the hubby to log in daily and participate because when he retires from the day job I want him to be over that 500k mark.  But I think I can back off, he has months to go and he's close to point mark.

Don better get after it, roll past that marker!

Good afternoon Bill,

Your post about points and how they can be earned by all sorts of activities here, is spot on. For some its a drive by comment for others it's all about engagement in a meaningful way. I've always felt the most valuable comments are the ones where real interaction occurs.

Mar 03, 2026 02:17 PM
Liz and Bill Spear

And there's a lot of opportunity for real interaction.  I've even enjoyed a few vicarious vacations thanks to others posting in the Rain.  You just never know what you'll find any given day.

Bill unfortunately through the years we have lost several members because they felt they were not gaining points fast enough or have received enough features to stroke their ego.

Mar 03, 2026 03:38 PM
Liz and Bill Spear

It's a shame to have that happen, this place is about way more than points and features.

Many of the points activities are not money making activities. Posting homes for sale and what to do to prepare homes for sale and similar posts especially for Rainmakers give you points and public visibility. Creating can be helpful when the time allows.

True, for points purposes, publishing a recipe is the same as posting about some pure real estate topic, but the latter are the odds on favorite to increase your business, sometimes for years and years.

What I value about the contests is the content engagement that they create. I have learned a lot about my AR friends from these posts.

They do provide a nice opportunity to learn more about our fellow Rainers.

You are spot on that it should be more about being part of the community and building relationships than racking up the points. Becoming know as the expert in your region and giving and getting referrals from to those you have built a relationship with in the rain from other areas should matter more than the points!

Mar 04, 2026 07:23 AM
Liz and Bill Spear

Buzz, there's a long list of people that I immediately think of for certain areas that I'd be happy to refer to.  And a shorter list of "nope, never gonna happen".

Points smoints.....I haven't cared about them in years. My account has always been free as I started blogging early on.  To me it's about building community and always has been.  Sure I received and gave a lot of referrals as well, but that's because I knew who they were and knew they'd take good care of a referral.

Racking up nickel and dime points is not the metric to improve and chase. It's dig in. The quality of your fresh frequent worthwhile blog posts. The ones that solve problems, visibly lead to more listings that cause more sales and make your bank savings account swell. That's the point to focus on outside the AR platform.

You make a good point, Bill. This platform is points-based and rewards participation and thoughtful writing, to gain in numbers.
I worked extremely hard to become #1 in my state, am all-in and have been since 2008. Relationships matter to me more than points and that primarily keeps me coming back!

Mar 06, 2026 10:07 AM

I've had #1 in Ohio for some time, but haven't found that by itself to help our business.  The stuff I did to earn those points has though

Have received referrals by being here, other than that, the public has no idea about the point system.

Good morning Bill. The first 500,000 points were a race to. number. Once passed, personally meeting members, speaking with them on the phone, or a text friendship take precedence. Enjoy your day.

Wayne, I got to shortcut the process a bit by winning a trivia question on Twitter when ActiveRain was celebrating a membership milestone and giving away a free Rainmaker account.  I'd been paying prior, and would have continued to pay based on the value of this place.
