Why would someone move from Brooklyn to
Putnam County NY?

People move from Brooklyn to Putnam County, NY for a variety of lifestyle, financial, and personal reasons. Here are the most common ones:

🌳 1. More Space & Less Crowding

  • Larger homes and yards — Putnam County offers houses with more square footage and private outdoor space, which is hard to find in Brooklyn’s dense urban environment.

  • Room for families — Ideal for families who want play space for kids, gardens, pools, and that sense of “home” that’s harder to achieve in a city apartment or brownstone.

💲 2. Lower Cost (Often)

  • Better value per square foot — Even though Putnam real estate isn’t cheap, you generally get more house and land for your money compared with most of Brooklyn.

  • Property tax trade-offs — It depends on the exact location, but some buyers find the overall tax/homeownership cost fits their budget better with the added space.

🚗 3. Suburban & Rural Lifestyle

  • Quiet, slower pace — A big draw for those tired of constant urban noise, nightlife crowds, and heavy street traffic.

  • Nature access — Putnam has woodlands, lakes, and hiking trails that many city dwellers crave.

🏫 4. Schools & Family Priorities

  • Highly rated school districts — Many families move for public school options they feel offer smaller classes and strong academic or extracurricular programs.

  • Safe, community-oriented towns — There’s often a focus on family activities, local events, and community involvement.

🛣️ 5. Commuter Access to NYC

  • Feasible commute — With Metro-North Railroad service from stations like Carmel, Brewster, or Cold Spring, it’s possible to work in NYC while living in Putnam County. Commutes are longer than Brooklyn-to-Manhattan, but many find the tradeoff worth it for space and quality of life.

📈 6. Pandemic & Remote Work Shift

  • Remote work made it viable — With more people working from home, the need to live close to an office vanished, making places like Putnam more attractive.

  • Lifestyle reevaluation — A desire to be closer to nature, own a home office, or have a better work-life balance has driven moves upstate.

🧘 7. Health & Environment

  • Cleaner air & less congestion — Especially appealing to people coming from dense urban environments.

  • Outdoor recreation — Great for hiking, kayaking, biking, skiing, and simply being outdoors regularly.

🧑‍👩‍🧦 8. Community & Social Factors

  • Community feel — Smaller towns often have more neighborly environments and local connections.

  • Less transient population — Putnam towns typically have longer-term residents, which can foster deeper neighborhood relationships.

In short, folks often leave Brooklyn for Putnam County because they want more space, more nature, a suburban lifestyle, often better affordability per square foot, schools for kids, and still manageable access to NYC. If you want, I can break this down into specific benefits for a particular kind of buyer (e.g., families, retirees, remote workers).

Those can be dramatically different environments.  The audience for this is looking for a very different lifestyle than the one they are living.

These are all excellent reasons for someone to move from a NYC  borough to Putnam County. I had a buyer couple who came from Brooklyn and bought a home in Orange County NY - the funny thing was the quiet in their neighborhood at night scared him. And they never got used to it!

I have often heard this. The suburbs/ex-burbs is not a good fit for every city dweller that left the city.
