Ask An Ambassador: Secrets To Climbing The Leaderboard

By
Real Estate Agent with Transaction Alliance 513.520.5305 www.WarrenCountyOhioRealEstate.com SAL.2002007747

Caring about points and spots on the Leaderboard range from 0 to 10,000 on a 100 point scale (translation, some care not even a little, and IMO some care WAY, WAY too much).

Some will have the epiphany that it's not the points, but the results of gaining those points that matter.  Blog posts making laps out in the WWW just waiting to be found by the right person who needs that agent's help.  It's a matchmaker business, I'll tell you about the type of home I want to sell and the type of buyer I'm trying to work with (no, those aren't the exact words used, instead, it's local market reports, subdivision posts and the like to narrow down the public's interest to my target market.

Each time I write one of those posts I get 225 points (maxing out at 10 posts a week).  That's "only" 2250 points a week, plus the 7 logins at 100 each, so at 3000 points a week, I'm no threat to catch the person above me on the Leaderboard unless they do way less than me!  But the trade, every one of those blog posts has the chance to turn into a client (maybe even multiple clients).

On the other hand, if I'm REALLY concerned about climbing the Leaderboard, I should be maxing out my daily comments.  25 points per comment, max 20 per day for points.  500 points daily for 3500 points a week.

Do the math, 3500 commenting points a week gives you more points than the 2250 blogging points a week by more than 50%.  The tradeoff?  Commenting CAN be indexed, but the odds of a consumer finding your comments are slim.  Not zero, but slim.  The positive?  Commenting points give you the chance to develop relationships, learn from each other, maybe pick up a referral at some point.  CAVEAT:  if your comments make it apparent you're a drive by specialist, no relationships, no referrals, no learning, just take your "empty" 25 points and continue your pursuit of the next higher spot on the Leaderboard.

The reality is nothing says you can't do both (blogging and commenting).  Especially if you're working toward your first 500,000 point milestone and want the free Rainmaker account.

There are other point collection opportunities, but blogging and commenting are the big hitters.   The one "secret" way up the Leaderboard.  Invite other people to join ActiveRain and encourage them to participate.  You get a bonus when they join, then 10% of their points earned each month as long as you're both active in the Rain.  Again, the math:  there's a Rainer who has 330,000+ points in her total SOLELY from me joining from her link years and years ago.   She's had to do nothing more, and still gets points.

You want to pass people and climb the Leaderboard ladder?  Put in the work.  Do the things.  And gain all the other perks of participation.

Or don't.

Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador if you need help,

This is a helpful breakdown of how the ActiveRain point system works and the choices members make in how they participate.

Blogging and commenting serve different purposes. Blog posts create long term visibility and can be indexed by search engines, which gives them the potential to reach consumers looking for local information. Comments, on the other hand, help build relationships within the community and encourage conversations with other professionals.

The most productive approach is usually a balance. Writing consistent blog posts builds a searchable library of content, while thoughtful comments strengthen connections with other members and keep the community active.

As you noted, the real value is not the points themselves but the opportunities that come from the activity behind them. Every post has the potential to be discovered by someone looking for local knowledge or professional guidance.

On the whole, I'll take the potential advantages of posting to the consumer vs. hoping for a referral from another member.  I still want to be connected with the people here, but some of that has moved to other venues (Facebook, texts, phone calls) rather than being exclusive to the Rain.

This is good information to share with those intereted in the Leaderboard.

An easy way to earn more points is to follow five additional members and post a reblog each day.

True, there are additional ways to max out for those interested.

Hi Bill,
I know people on this platform who are doing themselves more harm than good by feverishly seeking points... specifically with what we call drive-by comments that have no value. We all know who they are.

One more way to garner points that many members probably don't know about and is not even mentioned in the ActionRain Point System is to host Challenges.

Mar 10, 2026 07:03 AM
Liz and Bill Spear

For those of us that understand the intent of the point system and the core culture, seeing some of the behaviors by those purely seeking points long after they've crossed the 500k mark is off putting.

And hosting would be a great way to reinforce relationships and pick up some extra points.

The points are good for getting to a free account, but after that, only ranking matters.  When people realize that all they have to do is consistently be active, the points follow in droves, haha.

Mar 10, 2026 07:29 AM
Liz and Bill Spear

Brian, I understand being more aggressive about maxing out points to get to 500k, I surely worked to get there as quickly as I could once I grasped what the gain was, but after that the Leaderboard is more of a curiosity IMO.

Liz and Bill Spear  Points are nice for getting your free accounts and for being on the leaderboard, but it is relationships that are cultivated after that are important

Mar 10, 2026 10:52 AM

And if you gain the points the intended way, I think the relationships usually come with it.  We cross paths again and again with the same people.

Bill I get a chuckle out of those who claim they do not care about points or their position on the leaderboard, BUT they only post blogs with recipes or jokes, and their comments are all the same cut and paste.

Pretty transparent, surely thou doth protest too much? could be directed to some with that claim.

Hi Bill,

I'm with George Souto and the cut and paste comments are really annoying! As you mention in your post, there are so many ways to gain points if someone wants to, and various reasons to do so or not!!

Mar 10, 2026 03:12 PM
Liz and Bill Spear

Dorie, you and others who take the time to write posts should be given the courtesy of a comment that actually demonstrates the commenter READ the post.

Hi Bill- there are many ways to gain points and, if you want, climb or claw your way up the Leaderboard. I can remember when some members would comment on the maximum number of posts to earn points, and then stop for the day. Perhaps it was their way of prioritizing their time but they were also missing out.

When I began here, I can't tell you how many times I'd receive a comment that wished me luck and to "sell a home."

Mar 10, 2026 07:44 PM
Liz and Bill Spear

IMO it's really damaging to leave a comment that indicates the commenter hasn't read the post and doesn't know what the poster does for a living.

Points do matter and climbing the board is a measure of your daily work, not worth,  it is what you make it

For me, giving a referral is less about the spot on the Leaderboard and more about the type of content and professionalism displayed here in the Rain. You'd easily pass that test.

I find the opportunity to learn from others here is front and center. Hearing how real estate is done elsewhere is interesting and helps me understand clients when they relocate, making me realize I may need to educate them on how real estate works here. Building relationships and friendships is also great and a good way to earn referrals too.

Nick, I've long ago lost track on all the things I've learned from others in the Rain.  Amazing how varied the approaches are throughout the country in doing the exact same basic tasks.

The leader board, at least in Texas, has lots of dead wood. Wouldn't it be nice if those who have stopped blogging here, or who have died, could be easily identified?

Mar 11, 2026 08:09 AM
Liz and Bill Spear

Lorrie, for me personally, the Leaderboard ranking in Ohio hasn't helped me gain business.  I figure the Leaderboard (local and overall) are only used by other members to see where people rank..  If someone is ahead of me because they gained more points, so be it.  I've not done enough work (yet) to pass them, so that's on me.  Even if they're no longer present here, they did the work.
Would it be helpful if the Development team introduced some type of Active filter for the leaderboards?  Probably.
But even without it, hopefully when someone is looking to give a referral, I've already earned that trust no matter where I am on the leaderboard.

It can be sizeable over time, the challenge is getting people to accept invites, participate and then STICK to it!  Lots of people come and go, and fortunately some go, then come back, even years later.

Paddy, I'm not even sure we've had any new Ambassadors added since the Bob Stewart days.  I know the roster has shrunk significantly as various Ambassadors have left the platform.

I would say just get into the flow of things and do not worry about much else. Trust yourself to a degree because you are a professional after all and just kind of follow the lead of other people that have succeeded.

It's a matter of what an individual's priorities are.  For some it seems to be points/leaderboard, for others, it's maximizing potential for new business, for others this is just a social spot where neither points or business may matter.

I stopped thinking about points in 2010 on this site. If you Google and your blogged topics are not being found on google then you are not gaining anything but exposure to other AR agents. Having an AR network is great. I've sent/received clients to various agents I have met here over the last 17 years. I have always viewed AR as a networking platform rather than a lead-generation platform. Is anyone on here getting buyer or seller leads (not referrals) directly from their exposure here?

Mar 12, 2026 09:08 AM
Liz and Bill Spear

Steven Beam , we have gained direct clients from AR posts.  Specific subdivisions, patio homes, new construction, etc.  Posts from the 2010s still work for us, although I don't think AR has the google clout we used to.  I took many of those older niche blog posts and turned them into IDX pages on our Wordpress site and now they work better for me than just an ancient stand alone blog post.

Interesting. I still get a lot of traction from old longtail posts on my WordPress site that were posted many years ago. Some are so obscure I'm shocked at the traction they have.

I really have no way to track much of what could have come from AR over the years.

I agree that the Google juice for posts on AR is diminished. Used to see AR posts regularly in Google searches, but haven't in years.

Mar 12, 2026 11:53 AM
Liz and Bill Spear

I think it's always been a bit muddled.  What is pure AR?  What is from some other digital footprint?  Some things have always been clear because this may have been the only place I posted about a particular topic.  I haven't posted consumer facing content here in a number of years.  If I'm going to make a new consumer page, it's going on my Wordpress site.
