Do You Have Frost On Your Windows?
The photo above was actually taken of one of my car windows. Prior to our replacing the old single pain windows on our home frost was a common experience on/in our homes windows.
Here are the three main ingredients that create those intricate ice crystal patterns:
1. High Indoor Humidity
Everyday activities like showering, cooking, boiling water, and even breathing add water vapor to your home's air. If the humidity levels are too high for the outdoor temperature, that moisture has to go somewhere.
2. Extremely Cold Glass
Windows are the "weakest link" in your home's insulation. When it is freezing outside, the glass pane becomes significantly colder than the rest of your walls. This is especially common in:
Single-pane windows: Which have almost no thermal barrier.
-
Failed double-pane seals: Where the insulating gas has leaked out.
3. The Dew Point vs. The Frost Point
When warm, moist air touches the cold glass, it reaches its dew point and turns into liquid water (condensation). If the glass is cold enough (below 32°F or 0°C), it hits the frost point, and that water vapor skips the liquid stage and turns directly into ice—a process called deposition.
How to Stop It
Reduce Humidity: Use exhaust fans in the kitchen and bathroom, or run a dehumidifier.
Improve Airflow: Keep curtains or blinds open slightly to allow warm room air to circulate against the glass.
Upgrade Insulation: Use window insulation film or consider switching to more energy-efficient windows.
While I liked the wooden windows we used to have in our home the new vinyl windows are so much more efficient. The old windows were single pane with storm windows placed on the outside of them BUT there is no comparison between them and the new double pane vinyl windows.
If you are looking for a new home you should consider the cost of new windows if you see wooden windows (even if there are storm windows outside the wooden windows).
Note: I did use AI to aid me in finding information on this subject.
Wake Up Call
New windows are NOT cheap. Here is a sample:

Prices do NOT include installation.
