Visit McRae, Georgia During Peaches to the Beaches: History, Agriculture & Classic Cars
McRae-Helena, Georgia is a central stop during the annual Peaches to the Beaches Yard Sale. This town was established in the 1870s as a railroad hub, quickly becoming a key transportation and commerce center in South Georgia. Timber, turpentine, cotton and agriculture defined its early economy, and the roots remain visible today.
Now serving as the county seat of Telfair County, McRae-Helena supports regional employment through healthcare at Telfair Regional Hospital, education systems, local government, agriculture production and Georgia Department of Corrections facilities.
Surrounding farmland continues to produce peanuts, cotton, row crops and timber, making agriculture one of the area's largest economic drivers. Population is approximately 9,000.
Visitors traveling Highway 341 find McRae to be a relaxed, authentic stop along the 200-mile route from Barnesville to Brunswick.

One of the standout destinations is Pap Pap's Speed Shop at 19 First Ave and Pine Street. Specializing in classic car restoration, Pap Pap's embodies the American craftmanship and mechanical heritage that reflects McRae's working town identity. Visitors can view restored muscle vehicles, unique merchandise, and experience genuine Southern hospitality. Former Nasar Cup Truck Race Driver, Thomas Powers Sr., is the talented man running the shop. This visit is more than a yard sale, McRae offers history, heritage and horsepower all in one stop.
