2026 Carlsbad 5000 is April 12
Carlsbad has several running events during the year. The Carlsbad 5000 takes place on April 12th and is reportedly the world’s fastest 5K race. Several world and US records have been set, and broken, since the race was established in 1986. No doubt runners will hope to set new records this year! 2026 is the 40th anniversary of the Carlsbad 5000. (Feature photo is from Pixabay).
If you are interested you still have time to register online, but don’t wait as this event typically sells out. Registration closes on April 4.
There are multiple races on Sunday April 12th. There is the main event, the Carlsbad 5000 (5K). But other runners may be interested in the All Day 20K (four 5K races) offering 4 categories of runners.
The Elite Invitational races for men and women are by invitation and offer prize money.
The Junior Carlsbad races on April 12 are for kids ages 4 to 12. There are 2 options, depending on age. Kids can either run a ½ mile (ages 4 to 6 recommended) or 1 mile (ages 7 to 12).
The Health and Fitness Expo will be held at the Carlsbad Village Faire on Carlsbad Village Drive on April 11th (open 10:00 to 3:00) and 12th (open 6:00 to 1:30). You’ll find sports equipment, apparel, and so much more from multiple exhibitors. Runners can pick up their race kits Saturday at the Expo, or pick up kits beginning at 6 am on Sunday. Waiting until Sunday could mean long lines so you should plan to arrive early.
The post-race celebrations take place Sunday in the Village and will offer live music (8:45 to 12:20). The Pizza Port Beer Garden will be open from 8:00 am to 1:30 (ages 21 and over only with ID). 5K participants (21+) receive 2 free beers with their registration. Here’s the schedule.
The Carlsbad 5000 is very popular, so you can expect a few thousand participants and plenty of spectators. You should plan to arrive early to find free parking in the Village, and along the course to cheer on the runners and enjoy the festivities. There is no designated parking for the Carlsbad 5000, it’s all public parking.
Be aware there will be parking restrictions so be sure to pay attention to parking signage when leaving your car for a lengthy period.
And don’t forget about road closures including Carlsbad Boulevard (the Coast Road along the beach) where the 5K and other races are held.
