2026 Carlsbad 5000 is April 12

Carlsbad has several running events during the year. The Carlsbad 5000 takes place on April 12th and is reportedly the world’s fastest 5K race. Several world and US records have been set, and broken, since the race was established in 1986. No doubt runners will hope to set new records this year! 2026 is the 40th anniversary of the Carlsbad 5000. (Feature photo is from Pixabay).

If you are interested you still have time to register online, but don’t wait as this event typically sells out.  Registration closes on April 4.

There are multiple races on Sunday April 12th. There is the main event, the Carlsbad 5000 (5K). But other runners may be interested in the All Day 20K (four 5K races) offering 4 categories of runners.

The Elite Invitational races for men and women are by invitation and offer prize money.

The Junior Carlsbad races on April 12 are for kids ages 4 to 12. There are 2 options, depending on age. Kids can either run a ½ mile (ages 4 to 6 recommended) or 1 mile (ages 7 to 12).

The Health and Fitness Expo will be held at the Carlsbad Village Faire on Carlsbad Village Drive on April 11th (open 10:00 to 3:00) and 12th (open 6:00 to 1:30). You’ll find sports equipment, apparel, and so much more from multiple exhibitors. Runners can pick up their race kits Saturday at the Expo, or pick up kits beginning at 6 am on Sunday. Waiting until Sunday could mean long lines so you should plan to arrive early.

The post-race celebrations take place Sunday in the Village and will offer live music (8:45 to 12:20).  The Pizza Port Beer Garden will be open from 8:00 am to 1:30 (ages 21 and over only with ID).  5K participants (21+) receive 2 free beers with their registration. Here’s the schedule.

The Carlsbad 5000 is very popular, so you can expect a few thousand participants and plenty of spectators. You should plan to arrive early to find free parking in the Village, and along the course to cheer on the runners and enjoy the festivities. There is no designated parking for the Carlsbad 5000, it’s all public parking.

Be aware there will be parking restrictions so be sure to pay attention to parking signage when leaving your car for a lengthy period.

And don’t forget about road closures including Carlsbad Boulevard (the Coast Road along the beach) where the 5K and other races are held.

Hi Kathy Streib  It's a popular series of races and always well attended. I have been to watch the Carlsbad Marathon but never the 5000.

I am impressed that US and world records are set at this 5K. I'd probably set a record for the slowest person

It IS impressive for sure Kat Palmiotti  As far as being the slowest I bet I would be slower than you!

Good morning, Jeff... certainly there is no shortage of fun events in Carlsbad this spring (or any spring, for that matter). Hopefully you'll have time to enjoy some of them.

Hi Nina Hollander, Broker  There IS a lot going on and I don't always write about it all and certainly don't get to everything...there's more to come.

These types of races are quite popular, but they have definitely never been my cup of tea, haha.  I would enjoy watching others have fun with it, though!

I've never been a runner and don't plan to start now Brian England I've been to the Marathon a couple of times and it was lots of fun, but haven't attended the 5K.

Jeff Dowler, CRS those were the days that a 5K was very doable.  These days being a spectator is the extent of my 5K days.    🤣

Hi George Souto  I've never been much for running and have no plans to start now.

Jeff Dowler, CRS - Once upon a time in the land of Illinois, I ran many 5Ks, 1/2 Marathon, and Marathons. I was exhilarating! I love when runners unite.
