Saturday Soundness ~ Digital Detoxing

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Beam & Branch Realty TREC #547752

All of us are on digital overload. We are connected to our cell phones, computers, televisions, and, for some, online gaming. From the moment we wake up until we hit the hay, the digital world has enveloped our lives. And as I have shared before in this series, detoxing is important.

Today's focus is on the importance of taking some much-needed digital detox breaks. Taking the time to break free of the digital matrix will take some planning and some intentionality. However, when you do, your health and well-being will benefit.

Practical tips to detox from the digital world:

🧠 Make a plan to unplug and remove yourself from your devices for at least 30 minutes per day. This means turning them off and moving away from them. Think of this as a 30-minute coffee break.

🧠 Replace the devices with an activity that brings you peace, joy, comfort, or solitude. This might include taking a walk, sitting outside, and listening to nature, writing in a journal, taking a friend to lunch (no devices out), exercising, taking a hot bath, or simply allowing yourself to take a nap.

🧠  Another digital detox practice is to unplug the devices in your bedroom while sleeping. Having the phone right next to you while you sleep is not advised. If you do have it near you, place the phone on airplane mode while you sleep. Turn off the TV when sleeping. Your brain needs to learn to truly rest without the interference from the television.

🧠 Consider purchasing devices that help to block EMFs. There are many different things out there; just a quick internet search and you can find something that might be a fit for you.

🧠 Turn off notifications on your devices. These constant pinging sounds disrupt your mindset more than you can imagine. Re-training your brain away from these sounds will help you not be so reactive. Subconsciously, when you hear those pings, whether you realize it or not, your mind is already reacting. This keeps you on high alert and causes your body to release the stress hormone called Cortisol.

Why not give a digital detox a try? When you begin to take these breaks, you are allowing your body to learn to rest and to reset. After a few weeks, you should begin to see and feel some very positive results.

Good morning Paula,

Your advice to give digital detox a try is so important! I just walked 1.75 miles with a friend and no interruptions! The results are amazing when you give it a try!

Good morning, Paula... I've never had any issues detoxing from the digital world. Unless I'm negotiating a contract, my computer goes off every day at 6:30 pm and isn't resurrected until 7:00 am. My phone is left behind in my office at 6:30 pm, as well.  Except for a TV, I keep no devices in my bedroom and my TV is in an armoire so the doors to it are shut at night. Even my alarm clock has a setting to turn off the light for time. I read at least one or two chapters in a book every single day.

You are one of the few, Nina. That is impressive and encouraging.

Dr. Paula McDonald I haven't made it quite that far, but I do turn the notification signal off most of the day. The extent to which we use technology to socialize and gather information is off the charts and dangerous, since much of social media is a (psyop) psychological operation, in my opinion

Dr. Paula McDonald

I agree with you, Doug, regarding the psyop issue.

Paula, this is a much-needed reminder! In real estate, the "always-on" culture is a major cause of burnout. Silencing notifications to lower Cortisol is a game-changer for maintaining clarity during negotiations. I love Nina's "6:30 PM cutoff"—discipline in the digital world is the ultimate form of self-care.

Digital detoxing is becoming more important as our work and personal lives stay constantly connected. Creating intentional breaks from screens can help improve focus, reduce stress, and restore energy. Even stepping away for a short walk, quiet reflection, or time outdoors can reset the mind and support better productivity later in the day.

Turning off notifications and setting boundaries around device use, especially in the evening, can also improve sleep quality. Many professionals find that protecting a small window of uninterrupted time each day helps them return to their responsibilities with clearer thinking and renewed perspective.

In a fast-paced industry like real estate, building in these moments of pause is not a luxury. It is a practical strategy for maintaining long-term effectiveness and well-being.

You are absolutely correct, Gwen. I am working on implementing these practices as well.

What a timely reminder to step back from the noise and let our minds breathe a little, Dr. Paula McDonald. I liked how you broke it down into simple habits that feel doable, even on a packed day, and it gave me a nudge I probably needed. Thanks for sharing something that makes the whole idea of unplugging feel a bit more inviting.

Thank you, Lew. Unplugging is so essential in the lives we lead these days. Hope you are having a sensational weekend.

Paula I so agree!  I have been so 'off line' for quite sometime now.  And I learned years ago.....to just put that dam* phone down and don't look at it  It's so much more relaxing and fun to be outside and enjoying nature, friends etc.

I enjoy that as well. Getting some sunshine and having my hands in the dirt is always an ideal day for me.

Hi Paula- I must admit to loving my devices. However, my iPhone is used only for taking photos on our walks and never out when we're eating.

That is a good practice, Kathy, to not allow the phones while eating.

Back when cell phones were first introduced, there was a lot of talk about the waves that would cause people to get brain tumors from the waves, and the population seems to have survived that fairly well.

If people were to unplug from their electronics, they may actually appreciate the scenery around them and be able to carry on a conversation without auto spell check, Dr. Paula McDonald P

Unplugging our devices would certainly lead to better health since most of our devices emit EMF, which isn't good for our health, haha.  It's difficult to stay connected in today's world while trying to stay healthy as well.

You are so right, Brian. It is always a balancing act.

Hi Paula,
I totally agree. That's one of the reasons I love my road trip travel days. I'm offline for extended periods of time. Technology makes our lives easier, but it can also send us on overwhelm... especially with so much misinformation and hate speech hiding behind a computer screen. Intentionally stepping away, even for a short time each day, helps us reset and reconnect with the real world around us. Sometimes the most productive thing we can do is simply unplug and give our minds a chance to rest.

The misinformation and the hateful words are so destructive for all.

Paula, I do think we need to put down the devices to give us some peace.  My phone goes on silent after 8 pm back on at 8 am.   Since I am retired, I only hear from showings and Marketplace buyers along with friends.
