Motivational Monday…Act It!

Today is Act Happy Day—a reminder that when we choose to smile, laugh, and surround ourselves with uplifting people and environments, those small actions can gradually lead us to feel happy.

Have you ever felt down or sad, and then something someone says or does suddenly brings a smile to your face?

The mind and body communicate with each other. How many times did you stand up straight and put your shoulders back when you needed to gather your confidence before a special meeting?  That small act of your body saying, “I’m confident,”  changed your outlook!

Acting happy, putting a smile on your face when you aren’t feeling happy, can change your mood. You feel better from the release of endorphins…you smile, so those around you smile, then voila…happiness!

You know what I’m talking about! You’re out walking…you have a bounce in your step. The person walking towards you has a scowl on their face, but as soon as you smile at them…even wish them Good morning…their smile returns.

There’s a fine line, though, between faking it until you make it. If you’re not happy more often than not or if trying to act happy is temporary at best, it might be time to speak with someone.

While roaming around cyberville, I learned about the Happiness Rule, which says that “Happiness is determined by 3 factors: 50% genetics, 10% life circumstances, 40% intentiional activities” (by Sonja Lyubomirsky in The How of Happiness.)

What this is telling us is that, genetics and our life experiences aside, we can control how happy we are through choosing the activities that make us happy…being around those who are happy...by our own intent!

So this week…let’s begin by acting or being happy!!!!

Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.
Abraham Lincoln

The time to be happy is now, the place to be happy is here, the way to be happy is to make others so.
Robert G. Ingersoll

Action may not always bring happiness, but there is no happiness without action.
William James, Chad E. Foster

Good morning, Kathy... I was gob-smacked by the 50% resulting from genetics. I would think that like with many other things in life that stem from genetics or upbringing, it's possible to overcome with the right attitude and desire to overcome.

Nina Hollander, Broker I was surprised at that as well.  Although a predisposition for depression has to do with genetics and may be why  some people are terminally unhappy.

Kathy Streib that is an excellent point.

Good morning Kathy. Stephen Covey said man has the power to choose. If you use your 40% cut off this pie you can chip away from the genetics share and life circumstances to be in control and have happiness. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin I also believe we have choices however the choices may not always be the best. If genetics leaves you with certain physical limitations, your choices will be impacted by those limitations.

Good morning, Kathy.

It's a good thing I am naturally a pretty happy person, because I am a terrible actor.

That said, I'll do what I can to bring a smile to someone else's face. 😊

LOL Carol Williams I'm 99+% of the time a happy person and love making people smile or laugh.

Although I am not sure I believe the pie, I think happiness is mostly a choice although the life we are born with plays a big part.

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty that's what it's saying.  I don't know about exact figures but genetics can make us predisposed to be a certain way. Depression, for example, or chemical dependency, can run in families. But they do not make us that...we still have choices.

Brian England you'd be surprised. Hindsight is 20/20 but I've known acquaintances and counseled people who you would never have guessed were not happy.

Good morning Kathy,

I was actually surprised to see the pie graph on the Happiness Rule that 50% was based on genetics! A great message to start this new week and day! Loved the AI photo! What a difference a smile makes.

Dorie Dillard Austin TX I was surprised too. I think life circumstances would play a larger part than genetics.

George Souto I had mirrors on the desks of my consultants (at the staffing agency). While they were talking, they could see if they were smiling or not but whatever they were doing, this is how they were coming across.
