Philanthropy, States, and the Expansion of Trump Accounts
Philanthropy and States: Expanding Access to Real Estate Ownership
Trump Accounts are not only about federal seed money and family savings. They are also becoming a platform for large-scale philanthropy. The United States has always been generous, with Americans giving over half a trillion dollars to charity in 2024 alone. But until now, there hasn’t been a direct, investment-based way to channel that generosity into ownership for children at scale.
Trump Accounts change this by allowing philanthropists to fund real investment accounts for kids, without layers of middlemen and overhead. Michael and Susan Dell pledged $6.25 billion to help fund Trump Accounts for 25 million children under age 10, giving each a $250 boost. Ray and Barbara Dalio followed with a $75 million pledge to support more than 300,000 children in Connecticut. These efforts are part of the “50 State Challenge,” an initiative to encourage philanthropists to “adopt” states and seed accounts for children across the country.
State governments are also exploring ways to participate. Because states are often called “laboratories of democracy,” each can test different models for matching funds, rewarding financial literacy, or targeting support to lower-income families. Over time, the most effective approaches can spread, helping more children build meaningful account balances.
For future homebuyers, this matters because it broadens who gets to arrive at adulthood with real assets. If philanthropy and states help fund accounts for millions of children, more young adults could have cash available for education or that all-important first down payment. That could shift the housing market from one where many struggle to qualify, to one where a larger share of buyers bring equity and confidence to the table.
In simple terms, these outside contributions may help turn what might have been a renter’s path into an owner’s path. They can complement what families and employers are already doing, filling in gaps and leveling the starting line.
