Wordless Wednesday…Mother’s Nature’s Amazing Handiwork

Since I’ve been sharing recipes on Saturday, I thought this would be a good day to give you updates on our bluebirds.

Box 1…This is normally our most prolific box. It’s usually the first box with a nest. We feared that the construction of a walking path nearby might cause the bluebirds to seek another location. YOU know how important location is!!!

No need to worry… Mama Bluebird laid 5 eggs, which should start hatching towards the end of the week.

Box 4…We had 4 eggs in it after several years of no bluebirds. Three have hatched, and mom has been incubating them.

Our box…There are 3 chicks that mom has been feeding. We had a scare this week when a sparrow attempted to snatch one of the chicks.

Larry happened to look at the view of the nest on his iPad and saw the sparrow going into the nest. We raced out as Mom and Dad Bluebird were fighting off the sparrow.

Not a bird, but we saw this on the walking path this week. It’s a Giant Leopard Moth!

And…it’s NOT AI!!!

Though their adult lifespan is brief—just 6 to 10 days—it is devoted entirely to mating. Their full life cycle spans about a year, with most of that time spent in the caterpillar stage.

I hope you have time to get out

And enjoy nature.

Good morning, Kathy... your photos are just amazing. Those blue eggs are a true sign of spring and those baby birds are adorable. That is an amazing picture of a moth. Who would have thought they were beautiful?

Nina Hollander, Broker Larry and I were excited to see robins in our yard recently. I read they're nomadic so we don't often see them.

Good morning Kathy,

I've been wondering about those bluebirds! Loved the update and all the photos. You and Larry saved one of those little babies by running out and scaring off that sparrow! What an interesting moth discovery ! I don't think I've ever seen or heard about one!

Dorie Dillard Austin TX We lost one egg from the nest at home and I'm sure it was snatched by a sparrow.

I did not realize how short the life of a Leopard moth was, we discovered one a few years ago and it was enormous. I use an app from Cornell to identify bird from their birdsong and last week it was telling me we had several bluebirds nearby.

Joan Cox, Retired Broker/Owner I'm so glad we have the camera in our box here.  We see the egg after it's been laid, since the camera is at the top of the box. What's been fun is watching the chicks hatch.
