Bertha Benz - The Incredible 1st Automotive Marketer

Journal Entry for 3/20/2026

I learn a lot by taking classes at Olli/UNT in Denton, County, Texas. On Thursday, 3/19/206 I enrolled in a class called "Bertha's Grand Day Out." Now, I have to say, the title didn't mean anything to me until I learned who was Bertha!

Bertha, Wife of Carl Benz

Born Cacilie Bertha Ringer on 5/3/1849, in Pforzheim, Germany, going by the name of Bertha, she married Carl Benz, Inventor of (later known as the Mercedez Benz) in 1872. They say, behind every good man is a woman. It was because of Bertha's financial support, her engineering intuition, and bold public demonstration of the Benz Patent-Motorwagen that transformed (without her husband's knowledge), a little-known invention into a world-changing technology!

Carl was a just a tinkerer - Bertha was the Brains

  • Bertha invested her dowry and bankrolled the Benz
  • Bertha invented the first Leather Brakes
  • Bertha cleared fuel lines with a hat pin
  • Bertha repaired the ignition with a garter belt
  • Bertha field tested the prototype
  • Bertha was a woman - she had no patent rights
  • Bertha designed and added wire insulation

While Carl was tinkering, Bertha made history

Bertha was a mother of two boys, but she wasn't about to sit around devoting her life to domestic chores. One day, she told Carl she was going out for a while, and she was taking the boys. Carl didn't know she took the Motorwagen (Benz) out on a journey driving 105 km (65 miles) from Manheim to Pforzheim with her two sons.

Bertha made the world's first long distance auto trip

The trip didn't go without problems, but Bertha was a top-notch problem solver and solved every problem she encountered on the road and kept going!

  1. Her journey proved the car's reliability!

  2. Her journey generated massive publicity, leading to the sale of the Mercedez Benz!

  3. She convinced skeptics that motorized travel was practical and safe!

Bertha was the First Automotive Marketer

Her bold and daring trip was successful. Bertha's story was covered in the newspapers. The crowds cheered for Bertha! She launched the first automotive PR campaign by simply driving, problem-solving, and proving to the world that anything is possible when you believe in yourself. Suddenly, the world knew and accepted Carl Benz's invention. And the rest was history!

The moral of the story

Throughout history, there has been patterns in which women made historic achievements that have been overlooked or attributed to men because credit was never allowed to be given to a woman. Women were not allowed to get a patent or recognition by society. Women, like Bertha's inventions were stolen, discounted or presented under a man's name.

Good morning Patricia. Reminds me of the phrase "necessity is the mother of invention". Bertha was the mother of the Benz. She was the mechanic before we knew of mechanics. One of a kind wo provided encouragement for others to step forward. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin - Bertha Benz was incredible. She could do what most men and women could not do in her lifetime. Too bad women were not permitted to receive the Patent for her inventions because she truly deserved it. I did not know a woman's hat pin could be such an important tool!

What a great story to share. Bertha Benz is one of those historical figures whose courage and practical thinking truly changed how the world viewed innovation. Her willingness to take action, test the invention in real life, and solve problems along the way is a powerful reminder that progress often comes from people who step outside expectations.

I especially like the connection you made between demonstration and marketing. Proving value through real-world use is still one of the most effective ways to build trust today, whether we are talking about automobiles in the 1800s or real estate services in 2026.

Posts like this do more than teach history. They encourage professionals to think boldly, support new ideas, and recognize the often-overlooked contributors who helped shape modern industries.

Gwen Fowler SC Lakes & Mountains 864-710-4518 - I agree, this is a great motivational story to know and share about a strong woman who changed the world. While sitting in class, my eyes and ears were wide open! Between Carl, her husband and their two boys, Bertha was the dominant figure in their household. Learning how to problem-solve is a gift! When it came to the automotive industry, she could easily resolve issues.

Thank you for your outstanding comment. I greatly appreciate you.

Good morning, Patricia... what an amazing woman! How is it that virtually none of us have ever heard of her?

Nina Hollander, Broker - I am learning more every day because I am learning something new from retired University Professors who have done lots of credible research and taught students of all ages. Not only to the speak, but they also show evidence of what they teach. Plus, the classroom environment is interactive.

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 - No service calls in those days. Bertha did not have to depend on a man, and she wasn't the domestic chores type of woman either. If every girl had a mother like Bertha, can you imagine what a world we'd have today!

I learned to wash dishes, vacuum, dust, do other domestic chores at home and went to school learning to keep my mouth shut, unless raising my hand, and being asked to speak.

Good morning Patricia,

I love this story and so glad you shared with us. I have never heard of Bertha and her achievements....such a shame for her not to receive the credit due her!

Dorie Dillard Austin TX - The University of North Texas is a great place to learn. Unfortunately, there were many scholarly women, but they were not recognized by the society in which they lived. It's really a shame.

That is an interesting story, and it appears that there isn't much leg room in the back seat from what your photo shows, haha.

Brian England - too bad you weren't in class to see how the automotive industry started. It was progress and continuous improvements. But the first step was to get the vehicle on the road and prove its reliability by driving 65 miles successfully. There was nothing funny about this class.

Do you get offended by my haha Patricia Feager, you seem to always indicate there is nothing funny, as you did above, but I don't mean to make fun of any of your posts, it's just my nature, I am not trying to offend, but I apologize if I offend you often since it seems that you are offended by my comments more often than not.

Patricia. Bertha proved that the vehicle was reliable, and Mercedez Benz cars are considered among the best vehicles on the road today.  She was a woman WAY ahead of her time.
