Wordless Wednesday…A Quick Turnaround

Ready for another bird update???  Larry and I saw something we’ve never seen with our bluebird box at home. More on that later.

Box 1: Last week, there were 5 eggs ready to hatch. Mama bluebird was doing her job incubating them. Last Saturday, 4 of the eggs hatched. There are 4 cute bluebird chicks, and Mama Bluebird has been busy feeding them.

Our Box: Our box had 3 chicks and one egg that had not hatched. On Thursday, the 3 chicks fledged.

This is a scary time because while the chicks can fly, many are somewhat wobbly. One flew into the window but was ok.

Mom and Dad perch high up to keep an eye on the chicks and to encourage them to fly high into a nearby tree.

This is the last bird getting up the nerve to leave the nest.

After the birds fledge, Larry removes the box and gets it ready for the next brood.

This video is minutes after the baby bluebird leaves the bluebird box. He landed on our back fence, and Mom and Dad were quickly close at hand. These chicks are prey to larger birds, squirrels, and the neighborhood cats.

Oh…and our surprise…We already have a nest in our box at home. That’s a turnaround time of 5 days!   That was the quickest we’ve seen, but I read that the turnaround time can be 5 to 11 days.

We continue to wait on the two empty boxes at Kickerillo.

Good morning Kathy. Larry the landlord and his assistant on duty and efficient. Thank you on behalf of your tenants. Luckily you don't have to deal with evictions, all tenants are polite. Enjoy your day.

Good morning Kathy,

They are so cute! It's amazing how quickly they fledge! Love the video, hard to believe 5 days later another nest has appeared!

Dorie Dillard Austin TX We couldn"t believe it!  It typically takes them 10-12 days before they begin building a new nest.

It apers that there is a shortage of proper housing in the bird community as well, if it can be occupied so quickly after vacating.

Ed Silva, 203-206-0754 it was for bluebirds until groups began placing nesting boxes out for the birds.

If you are beginning to have quick turnarounds, then the housekeeping staff is going to have to up their game, haha.  Such incredible videos you are able to capture with the cameras set up!

Brian England it was dumb luck to catch them!  Once they leave, the parents usually scurry them up to the high tree branches for protection.

Enjoying nature up close like this is such a reminder of how quickly things change — and how preparation makes all the difference. From eggs to fledglings in what feels like a blink, and suddenly the next stage begins.

I like your note about getting the box ready for the next brood. That simple act mirrors so much of what we do in real estate — observe what’s happening, adjust, prepare, and be ready for the next opportunity.

Thank you for sharing these moments. It is a peaceful way to start the day.

Wow that is a quick turnaround, shows the lack of housing availability even for bluebirds.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 bluebirds nest in cavities, often in old trees or ones that have fallen. With development everywhere, it's harder for them to find good nest cavities. You should see them dive-bomb the squirrels.

Carol Williams I'm glad they've kept the area around some of the boxes mowed because in the summer, I won't set foot in that grass. Snakes!!!

Kathy it sounds like bluebirds do not waist anytime in moving in once the old tenants have left.

Very cool Kathy!  Several years ago I had a fake plant hanging in the side alcove that gets no sunlight.  Much to my surprise a Momma bird decided to lay egss in it.  And it was so fun watching them leave the nest one by one and figure out how to get up high. Actually she was a smart Momma as it was a very safe place to 'raise' a family!
