Friday Fun…Real or Plastic?

Easter is around the corner, and I’ve already started preparing for our family Easter lunch and egg hunt.

Do you remember dying eggs for Easter when you were a kid? I loved experimenting with different color combinations. Later, wax pens were introduced. We used them to write a name or draw on the egg before we dyed it.

My cousins and I hunted for real eggs. Our parents then made egg salad or deviled eggs with them.

Fast forward to 2026…our family hides plastic eggs filled with small coins and candy.  This is a GOOD THING since the bunnies hide 30 or 40+ eggs. Each year, when we’re working in the yard, Larry and I find at least half a dozen eggs from Easter.

Let’s have some fun:
If you celebrate Easter, do you still dye Easter eggs?

Do you use the plastic eggs??

Good morning Kathy,

We still dye some eggs as the kids like to make designs but for the Easter Egg Hunt we use plastic eggs filled with coins and candy. The kids are older now so not as much fan fare with the hunt itself but always make sure we have a dozen of the Cascarones around (confetti eggs)!!

Dorie Dillard Austin TX Oh yes the Cascarones!   I was introduced to them when I returned to Houston. My sister-in-law brings dozens upon dozens of them for the children. Thankfully, Larry doesn't mind the confetti in the backyard!!!

Oh, I definitely remember coloring Easter Eggs with dye when I was young. I didn't hide Easter eggs for my kids but if I did, I'd do the plastic eggs!

Good morning, Kathy... I grew up dyeing "real" eggs. Haven't done it in years... too much work for just Chris and me. I've never done anything with plastic eggs... I've never bought any in my entire life. I did not grow up with egg hunts... we just got beautiful Easter baskets with lots of chocolate goodies. I collect hand-painted eggs from Russia.

Nina Hollander, Broker I loved dying the eggs.   I leave filling the eggs to my Sister-in-law and some of the others.  I put the plastic eggs in a vase with flowers for decoration.

We always did this with the kids Kathy, and we did both. We dyed them and used the plastic to hide surprises!

We have always done both Kathy Streib . Now, with Timmothy being the only one at home, we only dye eggs. If Tina was still home she would still insist on a Easter egg hunt.

Having no children or grandchildren nearby we no longer celebrate Easter with hiding eggs. The plastic one are a good idea especially out here in the high desert. My sense with some of the not so friendly creatures I would be careful if I hid them where I would hide them.

No kidding Leanne Smith and you know...I hate snakes!!!!  This year we"ll have to put crime scene tape around our bird house because we'll have a new set of bluebird eggs in them.

When you find unfound eggs in the yard, do you put them somewhere to save for the next year's hunt?

Brian England we ditch what was in them, wash them and save them.

Good morning Kathy. We no longer dye Easter eggs. We us plastic eggs and hide them around our townhome. Since they are all indoors it is best. Enjoy your day.

We used to use plastic eggs filled with coins and candy as you do. Likewise I would find some as I was digging and weeding.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 I laugh every time Larry finds one. One year we tried counting how many were hidden and found but with so many children and eggs, it was hard to keep track of them.

Throughout the years, we have enjoyed hiding plastic Easter eggs and watching the boys find them when growing, now it's the Grands that hunt them, Kathy. I remember when my mom would make egg salad from the boiled eggs, despite the pastel colors on the white parts!

We don't really celebrate Easter anymore. The grands are getting too old for the egg hunts (the two youngest aren't the least bit interested).

I bought some pretty colored marble eggs years ago and stopped coloring real eggs.

We may be doing a brunch with some of the family, but still not sure.

That was always such a fun part of Easter and family traditions. We always dyed eggs and had a big hunt on Easter day. Lots of Egg Hunts up here so still fun to be had!!  The Elks club has a huge event, The Easter Rabbit lands in a helecopter and the hunt begins!! Hapy Easter Kathy Streib
