My Dear Friend Missy Caulk: The Impact She Made on All of Us

T
here are people who come into your life and leave footprints. And then… there are people like Missy Caulk—who leave a path.

From the very first time I met Missy in the Rain, I knew she was different. Brilliant, bold, and just a little ahead of the rest of us (okay… maybe a lot ahead). If Missy said, “You need to be on this,” we didn’t ask questions—we just signed up. Because she knew. She always knew where this business was going long before the rest of us caught up.

Atlanta: Front: Chris Bohn, me, Tammy Lankford, Second Row: Missy Caulk, Thom Abbott, Danielle Sharp, Don Baker, Third Row: Bill Spear & Ben Dunsworth. Fourth Row, Eric Michael & Melissa McKinney.

There are leaders, and then there are the ones who quietly shape an entire industry. Missy Caulk was that rare kind of leader.

Missy wasn’t just part of ActiveRain’s early days—she helped shape what it became. She was a true pioneer in real estate technology, a nationally respected speaker, and one of the most influential voices our industry has ever known.

But to me… she was so much more.

She was my dear friend. My mentor. My road trip partner across this country—from RainCamps to CRS events to REBarCamps in Atlanta and everywhere in between. We shared hotel rooms, late-night conversations, laughter, ideas and those moments that only happen when you truly connect with someone.

Front only: Thom Abbott, Missy, me

One of my favorite memories of Missy takes me right back to New Orleans. We were rooming together while attending CRS, NAR, and the very first NOLA RainCamp—already an unforgettable trip.

But what made it truly special? I had two major Closings happening while we were there—a $2M sale and a $1M purchase. And back then, those were BIG deals.

While everyone else was heading to sessions and soaking in the city, I was quite literally “at the closing table”… from our hotel room… via Skype.

My clients placed the attorney’s laptop at the head of the table so I could see everyone, be part of every moment and stay fully present. And of course—Missy had to sneak a peek!

But what I remember most isn’t just the technology (which, let’s be honest, Missy absolutely loved)…it was her. LOL She told everyone we saw/met after that, what I had done—like it was the most exciting thing in the world! She was my biggest cheerleader, celebrating those Closings as if they were her own.

And I think it’s safe to say… we celebrated all. week. long!

Left Front to back: Bob Stewart, Krista Caulk, Nikesh Parekh, Missy. Right front to back:  Brad Andersohn, Kerrie LaGuardia, Lauren Bernstein, Jon Washburn & me.

Another fun fact - Missy is the reason I became a Mac girl…OH, and an iPhone user! (And you bet! I’ve never looked back.)

One of the greatest honors of my career was when Missy asked me if she could name her real estate company after mine. At the time, I was an owner at Savvy + Company here in Charlotte and the idea that she, Missy Caulk, wanted to carry that name forward in Ann Arbor? That meant SO much to me. Because if you knew Missy, you knew… she didn’t do anything halfway.

She built Savvy Realty Company into something special—just like everything she touched.

Front Row: Melissa McKinney, Loreena & Mike Yeo, 2nd Row: Bill Spear, Cindy Jones, Missy, Danielle Sharp, Christine Donovan, Tammy Lankford Baker. 3rd Row: Thom Abbott, Eric Michael, me, Larry Story, Jason Crouch, Chris Bohn & Don Baker

And while her professional accomplishments were extraordinary, they pale in comparison to the strength she showed in her personal life.

Missy endured unimaginable loss… the passing of her son, her granddaughter and her husband—all within such a short span of time. I believe it was less than 2 years. And yet, somehow, she stood tall. She held her family together.

Missy carried grief with a grace and resilience that I have never seen before in another human being. She was, without question, the strongest woman I have ever known.

A devoted wife.
A loving mother to five incredible children.
A proud grandmother.
A leader.
A teacher.
A friend to so many of us here in the Rain.

And even through it all… she still showed up. She still gave and gave and gave. She still mentored. She still poured into others.

That was Missy.

When she was diagnosed with cancer in January of 2024, she faced that battle the same way she faced everything else in life—with courage, determination and incredible dignity. And though she has left this world, her impact will never leave us.

Not in this community. Not in this business. Not in my heart. Missy Caulk was one of a kind.

As we take a moment to honor those in ActiveRain who have gone before us, I had to put Missy in the spotlight—she so deserves any and all accolades bestowed upon her.

Thank you, Missy… for your wisdom, your friendship, your leadership and your love. You didn’t just make a difference. You made all the difference—to many.

And many thanks to Patricia Feager & Lew Corcoran for hosting this month's challenge, Celebrating AR Lives Lost. If someone in the Rain has touched your life and is no longer with us, it’s not too late to share your tribute this month.

HI Debe... what a wonderful testimonial for and introduction to your friend, Missy. She was not someone I knew, but now I wish I had.

Thank you so much, Nina Hollander, Broker! You would have adored her as well. She was one special person who shared endlessly and would pass up business to help others be successful. We beta-tested a web site together and she was forever gifting others the leads she got while testing the site.

Happy Friday!

Debe Maxwell, CRS Oh, dear, I am embarrassed to say I was not aware that Missy Caulk had passed away. I remember her well and her daughter, too. You have written a beautiful tribute to her life here in the Rain. Look at all the wonderful AR people in the pictures. Thank you, Debe. You are the BEST

Oh, thank you for your kind words, Hannah Williams! You do remember how very special she was too, I know. She was a member of several groups of Rainers who traveled to RainCamps and REBar Camps. She was SUCH a wonderful teacher. She was like you--definitely a giver.

Dear Debe Maxwell, CRS - I am at a loss for words. Rarely, does that happen. When you told me weeks ago, I have to write about Missy, there was a type of urgency in the way you wrote that told me, there was something extraordinary about Missy. But like many who signed up for ActiveRain, long after its establishment, I did not know this incredible woman. I can say, I recognized and knew many in those in your photographs.

The loss of Missy must have been so difficult for everyone who knew her. Thankfully, you shared those historical pictures and told her beautiful life story for all of us to read. All the people I knew in the photos by facial recognition, and most of all you and Missy, are incredible people.

The stories that you cherish and the people who came into your life, becoming central figures here on ActiveRain helps me to identify with the strongest, smartest, and most generous people that founded and embraced AR when it first began. What courage it took from each and every one who had their humble beginnings when it all began.

It is my hope and prayer that one more AR RainCamp Reunion takes place sometime soon, and that I will be able to join as many great people as possible, that I've come to know and learn about because of people like you.

Thank you for your entry for this March Challenge. It solidifies what I always believed. Some of the greatest people on earth or who were in the real estate industry, play(ed) a big part in the success of ActiveRain.

May not a single soul, be forgotten.

P.S. Your feature Photo touched my soul. As for the rest of your photos, I wish I could have been there when the making of ActiveRain all began. But I'm proud to say, it is still an honor to be a Member.

Oh, I knew immediately that I would get Missy's done, Patricia Feager but, I also have another member I may try to honor before the end of the month. Missy and I were just so tight. We could talk on the phone for hours and never be tired of talking! And, I'm not one that can talk on the phone for long periods of time--I can't sit still! LOL Many times we chatted, her daughters were with her and we would have a 'family pow wow!' She was such a delight. I miss her so much. I have ActiveRain to thank for the opportunity to meet Missy and so many other amazing members--like YOU!

Thank you so much for your kind words and I love that you loved my cover photo. ❤️

Debe they aren't random people, that's bill spear and Ben Dunsworth that's married to Danielle Sharp.    And yes Missy was one of the smartest and kindest people I ever met.  She sent the sweetest little outfit when Cooper was born.  And while it didn't work out she certainly recognized that "listing pages" was a damn good format.  I'd give my eye teeth to get it back.  The commenting feature alone was amazing.    I had some LONG phone calls with her.  And after her granddaughter passed I dreamed about her holding a kitten of mine that died the same day and I drew it and sent it to Missy.  She told me it reminded her of her girls when they were small.

Mar 27, 2026 02:48 PM
Debe Maxwell, CRS

OMG, that is hilarious, Tammy Lankford,! I swear I need glasses--I could not see either of them! I wondered how random guys got in our shot! LOL

Oh, she was so sharp and so kind and giving. What you said about 'long' calls - I said the same thing to Patricia in my comment above. We could talk for hours and I'm not one to talk long on the phone! I remember the kitten story, Tammy. How touching was that?

Like you, Listing Pages still, to this day, would have ZERO competition. Had those guys known how to market (or let US do the marketing for them), they would have had a better platform than Z. It was AMAZING and I do still miss it too. Ray and I were talking about it the other day. Someone will recreate it and we'll long since be retired!! Love you, gf.

Debe- I never knew Missy Caulk as you did but I certainly knew of her and how admired she was.  Your post is a beautiful tribute to the friend you admired. This quote comes to mind..."You die twice. She was an original here, Brian England and someone who welcomed me so graciously. She was a national speaker and I was just a local REALTOR in another state. I was so honored that she took me under her wing because I was SO uncomfortable putting myself out there online!

And, YES! Last night was FANTASTIC!! WHEEW!!! Down to 8...

Hi Debe:

What a beautiful, heartfelt tribute to one of the AC powerhouses and a very special human being. I never had the chance to meet Missy but certainly was well aware of the role she played in the early days of AR and her willingness to share with others. How fortunate that you got to know her so well and spend so much time together. Such a loss!

Love love love this post, Debe. I Miss miss miss me my Missy and friends.

So many great memories, so many special times, so much to be grateful for... being surrounded by people like you, and all the family and friends I made here in the rain.

I am in a new season of life right now transitioning, but also inspired by my true friend Missy!! She was my sounding board and mentor for many things in business, Activerain, and Personal life and trials. Missy helped me turn from a butterfly into a Lion, who is even now hopeful and ready to make his way back for the "Encore" of life!

Missy also taught me that "God is good, ALL THE TIME!" I believed her then, I believe her now! She will live on in my heart and memories forever and until we meet again for eternity in Active-Heaven. <3
