I Rarely Answer My Phone

I Rarely Answer My Phone

There was a time when I would quickly answer my phone.  I thought that it was all part of providing good service.

Enter the villian and now I rarely answer my phone.

Even when I recognize the number, I am hesitant to answer the phone.

If someone leaves a legitimate message, I will quickly respond.

I do not answer because:

  • Over 90% of the time the call is a scam.  Someone, or something, acts like it is calling from a legitimate business, but all that they are seeking is financial information with the intention of stealing from me.
  • The caller uses a spoofed number to make it look like they are calling from a local number.  If you call the number back, you will get the real owner of that number who has no idea that their number was just used by a scammer.  I have had friends call me and let me know that my number had actually been used to contact them with one of these scams.
  • If I did answer, it is possible that the caller will be recording my voice.  It does not take much of a sample of one's voice in order to replicate that voice and then use it as part of a scam.

If you were to answer a call from the villian, you will almost always get an artificial intelligence on the other end.  It does not matter how you answer the artificial intelligence, it is only programmed to send you through to the villian.  The simple fact that you answer, let's it know that it has a good number, so even if you hang up, it will call again, although from a different spoofed number.

The military and intelligence organizations of the United States have the ability to destroy other nations and kill or extract their leaders.  I would like to see this same technological prowess used to weed out and destroy these scamming villians.

Ron,

If the government is capable of taking out another country's leadership, it is certainly capable of taking out these scumbags.

Ron,

These villians are a major drain on business.  There are much better uses for artificial intelligence than these scams.

I would love to see them all gone as well. So infuriating and annoying.

Last year Apple rolled out a phone screening feature that I have been using. A caller leaves a brief intro message that I can screen real time- and if it's legit- I can pickup or I can let it go to voicemail for a longer message. Like you- I insisted on picking up every call if it was possible....but not anymore. I suspect as fewer people pick up the phone- these scammers will begin turning at least some of their resources in another direction- a fresh scam.

Hi Ron,
Now that I am retired, I feel no guilt about not answering calls from unknown numbers. I do answer numbers I recognize, though.

Ron, they are time suckers, and when I was active in real estate, it was just frustrating.   Now I have no problem with not answering my phone.
