Common Ground in a Divided World

“Peace requires the simple but powerful recognition that what we have in common as human beings is more important and crucial than what divides us.

Sargent Shriver

The quote by Sargent Shriver speaks to something both timeless and urgently needed in today’s world:

At its core, it reminds us that peace isn’t created through force, agreement on every issue, or the absence of conflict, it begins with perspective. It asks us to consciously shift our focus away from what separates us, politics, beliefs, backgrounds, opinions, and toward what unites us: our shared humanity.

In a world that often feels chaotic and divided, this message becomes even more powerful. We are living in a time where differences are amplified, on social media, in the news, and even in our personal circles. It can feel like lines are being drawn everywhere, encouraging us to choose sides rather than seek understanding. Division has become loud. Unity, quieter.

But Shriver’s words challenge that noise.

They remind us that beneath every label is a person, with hopes, fears, families, struggles, and dreams not so different from our own. When we recognize that, something shifts. It becomes harder to dismiss one another. Easier to listen. Possible to find common ground even in disagreement.

Peace, then, is not passive, it’s an active choice.
A choice to pause before reacting.
A choice to lead with empathy instead of judgment.
A choice to remember that being human connects us far more deeply than any difference could divide us.

In times of uncertainty and unrest, this kind of thinking isn’t naïve, it’s necessary. Because lasting peace doesn’t come from winning arguments or proving others wrong. It comes from building bridges where walls once stood.

And that begins with something simple, yet profound:
seeing ourselves in one another.

I often wonder...is power so important that it is worth dividing our country over it?

A friend said to me a long time ago, most people want the same thing, if the have kids they want those kids to have a better life than themselves. If we view the world through that lens and actually work to help each other achieve that we would all be a lot happier.

Hi Dorie,
It makes me sad to see people getting all upset over things they have no control over. I choose peace. Peace IS a choice.

Dorie- what is sad is that most of us want the same thing...to live in a world where we can be free, there is peace, and we are happy and healthy. There are those who can not benefit from that, who would rather see us at odds.

It's crucial that we stop calling ;people names and giving them labels. We have to be willing to see a reflection of ourselves in them.

Dorie your shared some very wise words.  However, common grounds seems to be completely absent in Washington, DC these days and sadly I do not see any effort to change that.

Dorie, our world has become divided, and very sad.  As many have said - we all want the same things!

Love this, Dorie! This is so beautifully said and such a powerful reminder. Love, loe, love the quote. Sargent Shriver captured something we all know, deep down (yet sometimes forget), in the noise of everyday life. If we could all lead just a little more with that perspective, the world would feel a whole lot lighter--and a whole lot kinder.

In my mind, I certainly judge everyone that I come across, but I don't let those thoughts influence how I truly feel about them until I actually get to know them.  More often than not, after getting to know them, I realize that any negative thoughts I had about them disappear, haha.

Good morning Dorie. "Seek first to understand"! You can't do that without learning their point of view. Most prejudge and never understand or even try. The other problem is they prejudge based on false narratives. And many rely on the false negatives. Enjoy your day.
