Today I came across this quote by President Theodore Roosevelt.
"In any moment or decision, the best thing you can do is the right things, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing."
His words reminded me of something I shared with my executive coaching clients:
Indecision is a Decision not to take action!
For anyone to move forward a decision must be made. Yet, how often are we or our clients stuck in “indecision mode” or what some may call procrastination.
Could Have, Should Have, Would Have
Don Marquis is quoted as saying:
"Procrastination is the art of keeping up with yesterday."
Now some decisions do take time. The SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis or what I have updated to the SLOT (Strengths, Limitations, Weaknesses and Threats) analysis helps to move that decision forward.
My husband is an individual who must consider ALL the “Pros and Cons” when he makes a decision. The most recent decision was the purchase of a 1917 Model T Ford that runs and is in excellent condition.
I have a tendency to quickly review the critical Pros and Cons not necessarily all of them and then take action. If the decision is more serious then I will employ my SLOT analysis. Yes sometimes I have made not the best decision, yet I am still moving forward.
Jay Shetty said “When it comes to procrastination and overthinking, we have to overcome our self doubt.” Possibly that self-doubt may return to our own ethics of doing the right thing.
Possibly this is why I created this mental tool, A.C.E., to help remove self-doubt and to ensure alignment with my own ethics. "Am I making the right decision for the right reason?"
Access, Clarify and Execute
My favorite quote about moving forward is from the philosopher Yoda:
Do or do not there is no try!
Remember, even if the decision does not deliver the desired results, these words by Victor Kaim:
“Even if you fall on your face, you’re still moving forward."
