Forward Progress Requires a Decision

Today I came across this quote by President Theodore Roosevelt.

"In any moment or decision, the best thing you can do is the right things, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing."

His words reminded me of something I shared with my executive coaching clients:

Indecision is a Decision not to take action!

For anyone to move forward a decision must be made. Yet, how often are we or our clients stuck in “indecision mode” or what some may call procrastination.

Could Have, Should Have, Would Have

Don Marquis is quoted as saying:

"Procrastination is the art of keeping up with yesterday."

Now some decisions do take time.  The SWOT  (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis or what I have updated to the SLOT (Strengths, Limitations, Weaknesses and Threats) analysis helps to move that decision forward.

My husband is an individual who must consider ALL the “Pros and Cons” when he makes a decision. The most recent decision was the purchase of a 1917 Model T Ford that runs and is in excellent condition.

I have a tendency to quickly review the critical Pros and Cons not necessarily all of them and then take action.  If the decision is more serious then I will employ my SLOT analysis. Yes sometimes I have made not the best decision, yet I am still moving forward.

Jay Shetty said “When it comes to procrastination and overthinking, we have to overcome our self doubt.”  Possibly that self-doubt may return to our own ethics of doing the right thing.

Possibly this is why I created this mental tool, A.C.E., to help remove self-doubt and to ensure alignment with my own ethics. "Am I making the right decision for the right reason?"

Access, Clarify and Execute

My favorite quote about moving forward is from the philosopher Yoda:

Do or do not there is no try!

Remember, even if the decision does not deliver the desired results, these words by Victor Kaim:

Even if you fall on your face, you’re still moving forward."

It drives me bonkers when people respond with "I will try ..."

Don't try. Either do it or do not do it - it is that simple in my mind.

Even if people do it and fall on their faces, they at least took action and did something.

Yes taking no action is indeed an action. I too have an issue with "try." Hence why I love Yoda's statement.

Good morning Leanne,

Making a decision is taking action and coming up with a solution to an issue. Not doing anything is not going to cure the problem.

How many problems lie in never never land awaiting a solution that will probably never come? Thank you and good morning.

Hi Leanne,
Sometimes the "right thing" isn't clear, but we still have to make a decision. All we can do is make a decision based on the information we have at the time. And, sometimes, doing nothing IS the right decision... until more information can be collected.

Agree and we can always make course corrections. Yes understanding the lay of the land so to speak may require more time.  However until we take action, we truly don't know if the decision is the right one IMHO

Leanne, I agree, some critical thinking before making some decisions are necessary.  Buying the home I live in now -- it was pretty quick after doing the numbers.   Moving to Portugal took a few months and LOTS of pros and cons.

Yes I would imagine moving overseas would take more time and definitely would have a lot more pros and cons.

If we don't move forward, nothing happens, haha.  Even if we move forward in the wrong direction, we will find that out and be able to move in a different direction!

So true, we can and should make those necessary course corrections.
