Pet-Friendly Property ~ A Great Selling Point

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Beam & Branch Realty TREC #547752

Are there aspects of a home that proclaim, "Dog Friendly"? Well, yes and no! Hang in there with me with this post.

Most people (but not all) love dogs. However, dogs can create a few challenges when trying to sell the home. Let's walk through this, "Pet-Friendly" listing:

🐶 ARRIVAL: You arrive and open the front door to a large pile of POO! Yikes, the smell nearly knocks you down. What a warm welcome!

🐶 TOUR: You dodge the POO and begin touring the home. As you cautiously open the utility room despite some aggressive growling, you start to pen the door only to be met with some very large canine teeth! Wham - you slam that door shut!

🐶 PET GOURMET AREA: As you near the kitchen, you arrive at a lovely pet food station. The whiff of Purina envelopes your nostrils, creating that distinct, musty pet food aroma.

🐶 PET PRIMARY SUITE: You arrive at the designated pet sleeping area. A mound of unwashed, filthy blankets greets you. Immediately, you are reminded that our precious furry buddies have distinct odors! Lovely!

So, yes, there can be some really lovely, dog-friendly properties. However, this is NOT one of them. APRIL FOOLS!

April Fools to you too Paula, cute post, but all this COULD happen.   I know my kitties are not clean eaters with their dry food, and pick up little pieces every day.

Thanks for reading along, Joan. And yes, you are correct, I've seen and smelled all of these scenarios.

LOL I was wondering where you where going with this Paula 🤣 Happy April Fools to You!

And BTW if I ever walked into a listing with a big pile of poop you now what I'd be doing!  Walking out!

Ha ha, Anna! That one actually did happen. Apparently, the dog had left a fresh one right behind the front door. As I opened it, the pile smeared all over - it was GROSS!

Why was the dog allowed to run freely.   I always made sure pets were contained and/or at doggy day care.

Good one, Paula. When looking for a home many years ago, Larry and I walked in and immediately turned around and walked out. The odor was so bad we didn't want anything to do with it.

Those kinds of smells absolutely turn me away for sure.

Good evening Paula,

I had to laugh you really got us! Happy April Fools Day. I have been met at the door when showing a listing of a huge pile of POO and my buyers were so grossed out they said skip this one!

Yep, me too. The way it slid across the floor as the front door opened was totally gross.

Good morning, Paula... as a pet mom of both dogs and cats, this was kind of "scary." Although, I have been in homes with all of those issues... just maybe not all at the same time. :)

Yes, Nina. I have experienced each one of these, but like you, not at the same time.

I am in the "not all" category, haha.  I don't dislike dogs, but I certainly don't like them enough to have one of my own, haha.

Oh, Brian. Wouldn't you love to have an adorable wiener dog?

We just got new carpets, and our Jackie now gets a tea towel tablecloth to eat from. It is interesting to see how much food ends up outside the bowl.

I've seen pet friendly on rentals, but homes for sale here (with the exception of a few rare condos we have in the area) don't mention them.  The exception is "has a doggie door" type of info.  But yuck to the photos and interesting finds in your April Fool's post about dog friendly.

I had fun with this one, Tammy.

Pets are not an issue but the owners sometimes are for the reasons you mentioned in your blog and many more. I met the pets who have much better lives than majority of the world population, and unfortunately I also observed those who are severely neglected. Wishing all to have only good pet stories and kind caring pet owners.

Apr 02, 2026 09:51 PM

Exactly, Inna. Many owners are blind to their pet's bad behavior - jumping on people, etc.
