Funny thing how one word has you travel down the proverbial rabbit hole. As I wrote an article about Due Diligence and the Title Commitment, I decided to research what this word commitment really means. Over time our understanding of words may change or may initially be in error as in the example of the word “passion.”
Per Merriam Webster Online dictionary, the definitions are as follows:
- An agreement or pledge to do something In the future
- Something pledged
- Promise to be loyal to someone or something
My next action was to look up the word origin and I am often surprised by the origin. NOTE: I do regret not taking Lain in high school.
The word commitment comes from the Latin committere “meaning to unite, connect, combine; bring together.” This Latin word is made from com meaning “with together” and mittere meaning “to release, let go; send, throw.”
Over time as most words evolve from different languages. In the 1600’s the word commitment now had Anglo-French influence and meant “the pledging or engaging of oneself, a pledge, a promise."
As professional real estate agents I believe we embrace all of these definitions from Latin to the present day because:
- We engage with ourselves with our clients
- We make pledges to our clients
- We make and hopefully honor the promises we make.
For me commitment is integrated into my positive core values, moral code or what REALTORS® identify as the Code of Ethics.
My commitment to my clients is paramount. This past week I drove to Henderson NV to meet with a client. This vacant land listing client had an Asian accent and was unfamiliar with how to complete the Vacant Land disclosure statement.
Sure, we could have tried completing this 8 page very detailed and specific form over the phone. However, I knew that taking that solution would have been equally time-consuming and very frustrating for all parties.
Also, by traveling the 90 plus miles, I was able to meet in person with the clients. Being an old school salesperson, I much prefer meeting clients in person when all parties are available. A plus was I was able to visit a much larger Boot Barn.
Next week one of the two homes I have listed is having a home inspection. As the listing agent I am always present for any inspection or appraisal. This is my commitment to my sellers because it is one way I protect and promote my clients. Unfortunately, the buyer’s agent cannot be present nor can the buyer.
Yes, being committed or having a commitment goes beyond the handshake as a commitment often does require a sacrifice on one’s time and even dollars. Yet to properly promote and protect our real estate clients, how else can we be?
