Living on the Windward Side: Why Kaneohe Has Been Home for 30+ Years
From Florida to Oahu: A New Beginning
I am blessed to live on the windward side of Oahu in the small town of Kaneohe. My journey here began in 1995, when I relocated from Florida with my husband, who was active‑duty military at the time. Like many newcomers, we started in temporary lodging in a high‑rise condominium in Waikiki. We enjoyed the convenience of walking to Waikiki Beach, but the constant activity and city noise didn’t quite fit our lifestyle.
Discovering the Windward Side
Back then, only two roads crossed the Koʻolau mountain range to connect the windward and leeward sides of the island. As we explored, we immediately noticed the dramatic difference between the two regions.
- Trade winds blow from the northeast, bringing frequent rain showers to the windward side.
- Those showers create the lush, green landscape that Kaneohe is known for.
- The leeward side, shielded by the mountains, is typically drier and more arid.
The tropical beauty of the windward side quickly won us over.

Finding Home in Kaneohe
After leaving Waikiki, we settled into a condo in Kaneohe. Once we recovered from the sticker shock of Hawaii real estate, we purchased our first single‑family plantation‑style home in the Ahuimanu neighborhood. As our family grew, so did our housing needs. After a few more moves, we eventually found our long‑term home in the upper Haiku area of Kaneohe.
A New Chapter: Downsizing, Not Leaving
Today, we are empty nesters. My husband recently retired after more than 31 years with the Department of the Navy, and we’re now preparing to downsize. Even so, our hearts remain in Kaneohe, and we plan to stay right here in the community we love.
Why Kaneohe Continues to Be the Perfect Fit
Kaneohe is the largest residential community on Oahu’s windward side and offers a quieter, more local feel than nearby Kailua. Nestled between the Koʻolau Mountains and Kaneohe Bay—an area rich in Hawaiian history—the town offers:
- Windward Mall, the largest retail center on this side of the island
- Windward Community College
- Numerous medical facilities
- Quick access to the Interstate Highway
- Proximity to Marine Corps Base Hawaii
My husband, an avid surfer, especially appreciates the easy access to the base for surf sessions. For both of us, Kaneohe offers the perfect blend of natural beauty, convenience, and community.

A Glimpse From Above: Drone Footage of Kaneohe
The photos and video linked below were captured by Joe, a long‑time friend, waterman, and drone operator. During a recent Kona Low storm, his family had to evacuate due to flooding from the Waialua Dam overflow. Thankfully, their home was spared.
Joe captured this drone footage above my Kaneohe home, showcasing the mountain valley, the Interstate Highway, and our beautiful town.
