Passion A Word We Think We Understand

By

Years ago driving back in NW IN during the week of Easter, I read a sign advertising “The Passion Play.” This play was reference to Good Friday and the crucifixion of Christ.

My brain started thinking how could anyone have a passion for dying? Passion was yes an emotion and something a person fervently believed in. For me passion was an intense desire, something positive, not negative and certainly did not have relationship with suffering. Now understand I was in my 30's when I read this and a life long confirmed Lutheran. Yet until that moment, I never truly thought about this word.

So upon returning home, I did some word origin research and learned the following:

Passion is from the Late Latin word passionem meaning “suffering, enduring,” and from the past participle stem of Latin pati  “to endure, undergo, experience.”

After reading the history of this word, I came to realize that yes Christ did suffer and did endure an experience. Now this word of passion made complete sent to me.

Funny thing in life, we often hear, read and say words without truly thinking about what the word actually means.  We take the definition that others have shared with us especially for many of the frequently used words. Or we heard the word so often we think we know what it means?

So what does this to do with real estate and

with us as professional real estate agents?

Well, if you read any of the numerous real estate blogs especially those on social media such as Facebook Groups, there are lot of real estate agents who have  shared who they have suffered, who have endured during the bad times and the good times. On social media, they put their suffering out for the entire world to see.

Then we read about the ongoing discussion respective to compensation and how some agents suffer because the compensation is not evenly shared. Possibly we read about the complaining (suffering) about other real estate agents or the current market, etc.

True in many real estate transactions, there is true ongoing suffering. For example, when working with less than professional real estate agents or other parties such as lenders we suffer from their incompetence. We endure their laziness. We continue to undergo the challenges of those real estate transactions.

And yet, we continue to be passionate because we want the best for our clients, for our industry. Demonstrating passion is part of who we are as professional real estate agents. For we are truly passionate professionals. And, I believe that makes all the difference.

That’s a great perspective on “passion.” In real estate, it’s not just excitement—it’s the ability to endure the tough deals, delays, and challenges that come with the job.

The best agents don’t avoid the hard parts—they work through them and stay focused on their clients. That kind of quiet resilience is what truly defines professionalism.

Tom you are so right on with your second paragraph. Passion does require a quiet resilience. Thank you and Happy Easter or Happy Passover.

Excellent post Leanne Smith . I'm going to have to read through it a couple of times to understand your take on the word passion. Easter has been my favorite Christian celebration since I became a Christian 50 years ago.

I understand. Previously before I undertook any research I had an entirely different definition in my head and suffering was not in that definition. As I have been a Lutheran since my baptism as a baby, Easter has become my favorite Christian celebration.

Expert guidance. Exceptional results.

I enjoyed how you pulled the meaning of passion back to its roots and tied it to the real work we do every day, Leanne Smith. Your take on enduring the tough parts of this business hit close to home, and it made me smile at how often we forget what words actually carry. Thanks for sharing this thoughtful reminder.

There are so many words we believe one thing and over time have taken on a different meaning.  Passion is a two edge sword.
