Lesson Learned: Hide Your Valuables When Your House is For Sale

By
Real Estate Agent with Front Gate Real Estate Broker 11085

The seller asked me to meet the cleaning lady at the house to let them in to clean, which is exactly I did. I met her and her helper, introduced myself, let them in to do their job, then left.

Graphic of a house cleaner

Later that day when the owner arrived home, she asked if I'd seen her Apple Watch, to which I replied no, I hadn't.

Truth be known, I wouldn't have noticed if it were right in front of me. But I suggested the cleaning ladies might have put it in a drawer for safekeeping.

This provided an excellent opportunity for me to remind my client to put away their valuables during showings, whether it be their jewelry, cash, or any prescription drugs, especially narcotics.

Why???

Because, as much as we try to screen prospective buyers, there could be someone with nefarious intentions and our job is to safeguard your home as much as possible.

If you are preparing your home for sale, take a few moments to move your jewelry to a safe location. Remove any cash you may have lying around. Put away your electronics. And place any prescription drugs in a locked cabinet where they cannot be easily found. Same thing goes for any handguns or weapons. PLEASE be sure these things are out of sight.

Now, for the rest of the story...

Three days later, the watch is still missing...

For the life of me, I cannot fathom why anyone entrusted to perform a task for a client would "lift" something of value. I'm still shaking my head over this situation. Thank GOODNESS I didn't recommend this cleaning person.

Regardless, I feel bad for my seller, and am not sure what to do. There is no "proof" of when the item disappeared. It COULD have been misplaced or lost, or it might have disappeared earlier than suspected.

THIS IS WHY it's important as a seller to put things away, so there will be no mistake, no temptation, no "misplaced items", no suspicions.

For three days or longer I have hoped that watch would turn up Dorie Dillard Austin TX. I think it is long gone. It's so sad that a trusted individual would betray someone in this way. And these people came highly recommended! Not by me, but from another trusted source. You really have to be careful who you let into your home.

Pat- good reminder to sellers.  Don't leave your mail out, hide valuables including your laptop.

GilbertRealtor BillSalvatore - Hi Bill, thanks for stopping by. Nice to see you.

Kathy Streib - The mail is something I omitted, but it's just as important to put it away. Thanks for mentioning that. I remember one client hid her laptop beneath the sofa cushion. I thought that was pretty smart!

Hello Pat - I am sorry this happened to your client but it's also a longtime reminder to be mindful of opportunity.  I hope the watch shows up.

Good morning Pat. While I advised sellers to secure valuables and drugs in advance of the property going active,  I did not have a written disclosure. Never had any problems. Those were the days. These days I would have a written disclosure. So glad to be retired. Enjoy your day.

Great reminder. You highlighted the importance of securing valuables like jewelry, cash, and prescription medications during showings, which many sellers overlook. I also like how you explained that even with screening, not everyone entering a home can be fully controlled, and the takeaway to remove temptation and avoid misunderstandings altogether is solid advice.

This kind of thing happens all the time. I tell sellers to make sure electronics, collectables, prescription meds and sports collectables are hidden away under lock and key. I also warn about paid bills with account numbers.

This is a great reminder that nothing valuable should be left out. As for this particular thing, there's no proof the cleaning company took the watch. The seller could have lost it elsewhere.

Wayne Martin - this is the first time something has disappeared at one of my listings. It's happened to "other people" but not to me.  Like you, I miss the good ol' days.

Gwen Fowler SC Lakes & Mountains 864-710-4518 - we can't remind clients often enough to protect their valuables. Unscrupulous people are all around.

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty - it's a good idea to put away all mail, bank statements, like you said, any document with account numbers or financial information.  Thank you!

Kat Palmiotti - there is no concrete proof, just circumstantial evidence. I left out one detail; we took professional photos the day immediately prior and the Apple watch was shown in the photo on the nightstand. No-one else was in the house, except for me and the photographer. And I'm convinced neither of us took it.  It's just a sad situation and a lesson learned. Put your valuables away, every time.

Candy Stevens, EA - you'd be surprised how often I have to remind my clients, especially my female clients who leave jewelry hanging on little displays for easy access. But those are mostly costume jewelry; still, I'd hate for anything to go missing.

Laura Cerrano - we want to think the best of people, but still exercise caution and good sense. Thanks for reading!

It is hard to have those talks with clients but necessary, it does not imply we don't trust people, but that we are looking out for our client and their property.
