The Uninvited Guest

The Uninvited Guest… and Finding the Door

Every now and then, especially in Condo or Apartment living, you might discover… you have a tiny, unexpected guest.

Let’s call him “The Uninvited Buyer.”

And before anyone jumps to conclusions, let me say this clearly… it has nothing to do with how clean your home is or how well you take care of it.

Sometimes, it’s just cold outside.

And when it's cold, little critters go looking for warmth.

They don’t ring the doorbell.
They don’t schedule an appointment.
They just… find a way in.

It might be a small hole in the wall.
A gap near a vent.
A space around where an appliance is hooked up.
Even something as tiny as an opening near the hot water heater or under the sink.

And here’s the important part.

Until you figure out where they’re getting in… you haven’t solved the problem.

You can set traps.
You can bait.
You might even catch one.

But if the door is still open… another one can walk right in.

This is one of those simple truths that shows up in real estate all the time.

We can keep addressing the symptom
Or we can find the source.

Sometimes the entry point is outside… a missing piece of mortar, a gap in brick, a tiny opening you would never notice unless you were looking for it.

Sometimes it’s inside… a small space around a pipe, a loose fitting, something that was never fully sealed.

But once you find it…

Now you have the power to fix it.

Yes, they are unwelcome guests.

But the only way to truly uninvite them…

is to close the door they used to get in.

Because in real estate, and in life, it’s not just about what you see and hear…
It’s about finding where it started.

Margaret Rome Baltimore 410-530-2400 - What a cute blog post. Sometimes pesty critters find a way in and that's a sign to get busy and find the source then nip it in the bud!

Patricia Feager Most folks would say there is nothing cute about a mouse.

Happy Easter!

I don't think that I have ever seen a mouse in any house that I have lived in, but I know that it happens, haha.  Happy Easter!

I've seen critters in some listings over the years. I've even thrown one or two away. It's surprising how they sneak in!

Great analogy and a message that applies far beyond the situation itself.

You captured the idea that fixing symptoms isn’t the same as solving the problem. Whether it’s a home issue or something in a transaction, finding the source is where real solutions begin.

Clear, relatable, and something both homeowners and agents can take to heart.

Fixing symptoms isn’t solving the problem; real solutions come from identifying the source, whether it’s a home issue or a transaction.

And the hole or gap does not need to be big either Miss Margaret Rome Baltimore 410-530-2400 - those little critters can squeeze through the smallest spaces.

You nailed it - All the traps and bait in the world won't solve uninvited guests - the entry door must be closed.

Hope you have had a wonderful day, Kathleen Daniels, Probate & Trust Real Estate Svcs.  The solution is to close all the doors.

Hi Margaret,
It often amazes me what tiny openings some critters can get in through. It's not easy to figure it out.

Margaret my house backs up to the woods, and this year had uninvited field mice, which we fortunately were able evict quickly.

Years ago I kept hearing kittens while I was in my office.  I thought they were outside the window - which was weird because the pool is close by.  By the second day they got louder and I knew somehow the Mom had found a way in and had her kittens in the attic.  Sure enough Gary went up in the attic and rescued the kittens and our handyman came over and plugged up the tiny hole.  We put the kittens in a big tall box in a safe alcove hoping Mom would find them.  And she did and got them to a place she thought would be safe.  And BTW some friends of ours just rescued a 3 week old kitten that somehow got himself in a AC vent.  Kitten was lucky to find such great parents!
