April Bird Migration in North Texas 2026

By

Journal Entry for 4/6/2026

April is Bird Migration Month in DFW, Texas. In Flower Mound and throughout the Metroplex millions of birds will pass through Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW).

Here's What We Can Expect

Birds traveling from Central and South America will arrive in North Texas. These include:

  • Warblers - expect to see a colorful variety, including Nashville Warblers, Black & White, and Yellow-Rumped.

  • Hummingbirds - People around the Metroplex have already reported seeing Ruby Throated and Black-Chinned Hummingbirds making stops at their feeders.

  • By mid-to-late April keep your eyes open for Buntings! The vibrant Painted Bunting and Indigo Bunting are absolutely gorgeous!

  • Flycathers and Vireos - These are the iconic Texas Tail Streamers, officially known as Scissor-Tailed Flycatchers.

  • Shorebirds - You will most likely see American Golden-Plovers and Upland Sandpipers in local Lake Lewisville and Lake Ray Hubbard.

Forecasting Migration

Current forecast: Heavy nights in DFW! Residents can expect hundreds of thousands of birds to fly over in a single evening.

The Peak:

The critical peak period in North Texas is between April 22 - May 12. Over a billion birds will cross the State of Texas.

Declined Population:  North American bird populations have declined as reported in BirdCast by 30% since 1970 due to Light Pollution. Throughout the month of April Conservationists are pushing "Lights Out Texas," to save the bird population. Turn off non-essential lights between 11:00 PM and 6:00 am to help birds navigate safely.

We are excited by the Yellow Finches at the feeder at 3 each day. They do not stay here, so we look forward to their visit.

Gwen Fowler SC Lakes & Mountains 864-710-4518 - How exciting!

I've heard Finches love black oil sunflower seeds. Do you know if that's true or does your feeder provide something else Finches love? I think Yellow Finches are absolutely beautiful!!!

You are so lucky - and you have it timed!!!

I'm hearing a songbird right now. But I can't find it - not yet!

Good morning, Patricia... I've heard of this migration. It must really be quite the sight to see. I don't recall seeing anything like this in Charlotte.

Nina Hollander, Broker - I was fortunate a few weeks ago when I got that picture of the Blue Bird. At the time I was reading on a bench I heard the bird singing and turned my head towards the direction of the song when I saw the Blue Bird on the tree where the leaves hadn't grown.

By the time trees are covered in leaves on branches, we may hear but it will be very difficult to see the singing bird. Right now, most of our trees are full of leaves and birds are hidden between the green leaves.

Nina Hollander, Broker Bird Migration is a phenomenon no one should miss on purpose. Truly! It is a sight to behold and to give thanks!

I've seen the Carolina Wrens in my backyard about a week ago.

Patricia Feager I hear birds around my yard... but I virtually never see them.

Patricia Feager hi Patricia... at this time of year you won't see me outside a whole lot... we are inundated with the annual yellow pollen, which is the only pollen I'm allergic to. So I stay indoors as much as possible.

We are a good month behind you Patricia Feager but we have enjoyed seeing ducks, geese, robins, and woodpeckers flocking in.

Bob "RealMan" Timm - The very first bird I was introduced to in Chicago was the Robin! They stayed until Fall before the first cold snap. Here in Texas they must just fly through during migration. I only saw the Robins twice in 29 years living in Texas. Both times, I only saw them on one day only.

If I spot a Robin, I'll be sure to let you know! Then, you should keep an eye out to see if they head your way!

We have already been seeing the geese migrations and smaller birds too. It is quite amazing to see them all in a flock that seems to go on for miles.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 - It's such a thrill to see bird migrations.

Local Geese live in Flower Mound year-round. Canadian Geese can also live in Flower Mound, Texas year round and will increase in quantity in winter. A large number of Canadian Geese arrive from the North in the month of September and will co-exist with the local Geese here in Flower Mound. We see the mostly around ponds, golf courses and local lakes.

CA COASTAL ESTATES Lauren Selinsky Perez CRS - It has to be so hard on you and missing your boy never goes away. May the love of your son be with you always to give you comfort and memories.

I also love when birds are seen in the V Formation! It's such a powerful way to view the Leader and the followers.

Cheers back to you!!!

Good morning Patricia. Where we currently live, for some reason, birds think it is a great place to attempt to build a nest in the area immediately above our front door. We agree to disagree. That said, just yesterday a few were scouting the location and migration is underway here in Illinois. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin - WOW! I can't help but wonder if there was a tree that birds migrated to long before the construction of your home and that's why you see a nest in the area immediately above your front door.

It's a fact that birds do return to the same nest or roosting tree (or general area) year after year. It would be good for you to know the history of yours and other houses when the development started. My house was built in 1994. I moved here in 1998. The original neighbors that I met had lots of good information about my house and the trees that existed before the lots were bull dozed for new construction.

If the birds are scouting for the location, it must mean they must know something you don't know! It's good to know when migration is underway so that you're more prepared in the future.

George Souto - Birds are expert travelers. They know when to migrate instinctively.

On the day you see your first hummingbirds, will be a good day for you!

Good afternoon Patricia Feager,

Bird Migration is a phenomenon! My favorite sighting is when they fly in a V formation!

Dorie Dillard Austin TX - Whenever I see a V formation, I can't help but stop, pull over, or just be still to enjoy the sky show. I often wonder who decides to be the Leader when birds are migrating.

Birds are such beautiful creatures!  There is a Riparian Preserve near my home, which I should really visit more often.

Brian England - I would be at that Riparian Preserve all the time! It sounds like the best place to visit in early spring and late fall.

Kat Palmiotti - Everything here in Flower Mound is so green. I've only seen a few late blooming trees but otherwise, things are green and growing. Birds are flying and chirping. This is my favorite time of the year!

I hope things warm up and spring comes soon for you!
