🌸 Spring Cleaning Isn’t Just a Chore, It’s a Fresh Start

There’s something about this time of year that makes us want to open the windows, let the sunshine in, and hit reset on our homes. Spring cleaning isn’t just about dusting and decluttering—it’s about creating a space that feels lighter, brighter and ready for whatever this next season brings.

The Essentials

  • Clean windows (hello sunshine!)
  • Clean baseboards (why do they get so dusty?!)
  • Wash blinds and curtains
  • Deep clean carpets and flooring
  • Power wash exterior areas (house [NOT WINDOWS], sidewalks and driveway)
  • Scrub & reseal grout (kitchen and baths)
  • Clean light fixtures & ceiling fans
  • Polish or paint door and window hardware

These are the foundation of a truly clean home—and they make a HUGE difference, especially if you're thinking about selling. It’s also perfect if just love that “model home” feel!

A Few Smart Add-Ons (That Most People Forget!)
Here are some often-overlooked items that can elevate your spring refresh:

Inside the Home

  • Wipe down kitchen cabinets (inside & out)
  • Clean out and organize pantry + refrigerator
  • Disinfect doorknobs, light switches & handles
  • Rotate & vacuum mattresses
  • Clean behind and under appliances

Air & Energy Boost

  • Replace HVAC filters (Should be done monthly, not just in the spring!)
  • Dust and clean air vents
  • Add a few fresh plants or flowers for that instant lift

First Impressions Make a Difference - ALWAYS!

  • Wash or replace welcome mats
  • Touch up front door paint
  • Add a fresh seasonal wreath or planters

Why This Matters (Even If You’re Not Selling)

As someone who’s been in real estate for years, I can tell you—clean homes feel better, photograph better and yes, they sell better as well. But even if selling isn’t on your radar, this is about something bigger—creating a home that feels good to live in. Because when your space feels fresh and organized, everything else just flows a little easier.

My Favorite Spring Cleaning Mindset

Don’t try to do it all in one day. Pick a few items, check them off and enjoy the progress. Turn on some music, pour a cup of coffee (or a glass of wine later!) and make it something you actually enjoy doing. You’ll look forward to spring cleaning each year if you make it ‘fun!’

Let’s Talk!

What’s the ONE thing you always clean in the spring that makes the biggest difference in your home? Remember this is what ActiveRain is all about—we’re all picking up a few new ideas from each other each and every day! So do share!

Debe I will be doing Spring Cleaning this year not only on my house, but also a MAJOR cleaning on my garage.

This is the first house in a very long time that I don't have a garage. We have a carport but, no storage there at all. For me, that's a blessing because I've been known to store so much in my garage that I can only get one car in there, George Souto!!!

Hi Debe... no spring cleaning inside my house... it's kept up daily and deep cleaned every other week. Outside is a whole other matter... now just waiting for the yellow pollen to stop falling before I start scheduling work.

Oh, the pollen has been terrible this year, Nina Hollander, Broker! I think I’ve washed my car 3 times a week for the past month!

Debe Maxwell, CRS I think I'll brave it today and go and wash the pollen off my porch.

YES!! That’s so true, Sham Reddy CRS. I worked one entire day washing all of my outdoor cushions and chairs. It was a LOT of scrubbing but, it felt SO good just being outdoors!

Hi Debe- There's something refreshing about tackling these projects!  I try to keep up with things daily and weekly. Then there are the little tasks that only need to be done a few times a year!   My closet is an ongoing project.

Debe Maxwell, CRS

Oh, I am a clean freak so, it’s daily and weekly for me too. Cleaning out cabinets, closets, having the windows cleaned and scrubbing and resealing grout are spring cleaning items I am always motivated to do when the sun is out and it’s 65º or 70º, Kathy Streib. Oh and my closet is, and always has been, an ongoing project!

Debe Maxwell, CRS - I see you and Margaret Rome Baltimore 410-530-2400 as the real pros. I'm just determined to do better every day.

That image you created of yourself is a true likeness to you. You have every reason to be proud.

Debe Maxwell, CRS   the spring-cleaning list you show looks too much like a 'honey-do list and I don't have any of those that are around long.

HaHa! Sadly in my house, Ed Silva, 203-206-0754 I am the honey-do-demander and the honey-do-list-tackler!! I will confess that I do hire a few of those items out though!

I don't spring clean! There, I said it!

I deep clean one room a month. Everything not used goes to charity, garage sale, or the trash. Drawers, closets, shelves and every nook and cranny gets thoroughly cleaned. When I am done, I start over!

I've been doing this for over 9 years since I decluttered a big house of 30 years before moving! The exception has been this year due to surgeries from my gangway accident last July. I got started again in January and I'm on break this month due to the knee surgery last week. But I am working on paperwork filing, scanning and decluttering.

I have another rule. When I buy something, something has to go. I think twice before buying things because you just can't keep bringing things in without removing something and stay clutter free.

I learned my lesson the hard way.

Dee Toohey, I SO wish we could reblog comments—I would totally reblog yours above! I love the deep-cleaning of one room a month. And, I love that you’ve stuck to it for an entire 9 years! I have wondered how my clutter-free home 2 years ago has become cluttered again (in my book, maybe not in everyone’s eyes)! It bothers ME and I’m the one that has to live with, what I believe to be clutter.

I am going to do my best to strategize deep-cleaning my own home, one room at a time, and put your plan on my calendar. You have truly motivated me, Dee. THANK YOU!!! 😘

See lots of houses where the seller bought a new couch. Pushed the old one from 1989 and the one before that in 1972 deeper into the getting smaller room Dee Toohey. Great list Debe Maxwell, CRS! The 14'X12' living room during the listing feels 9'X7' "tiny home" size unless a heave ho gotta go happens.

Good evening Debe,

Spring is definitely time to clean house! Your checklist is excellent for the entire home. I definitely truly and keep up with things but I always like to really clean in the spring and the fall! Love the image of you!

Debe Maxwell, CRS

Thank you, Dorie Dillard Austin TX! That’s ChatGPT that did the image. I look a lot younger in their version of me than I do in real life though! LOL

I do keep up with things daily and weekly as well but, do love really deep cleaning in the spring. It energizes me!

Same, John Pusa! I spent a day cleaning outdoor cushions and chairs and this coming week, I’m repainting wooden patio chairs. It’s so invigorating, isn't it?!!

Great post. You went beyond basic cleaning and showed how spring cleaning improves how a home feels, photographs, and presents—especially for sellers, which is so important. I also like the inclusion of often-overlooked tasks like HVAC filters, vents, and cleaning behind appliances, along with the focus on first impressions like entryways and curb appeal, which really make a difference.

Thank you, Gwen Fowler SC Lakes & Mountains 864-710-4518! Those things that make a difference in curb appeal also make you feel so good when you drive up to your own home.

Good Monday morning, Debe. These are good reminders to share.

We have done a lot of spring cleaning at our house. The next chore is the touch up of the paint on our fence.
