Marathon Monday is April 20, 2026
The Boston Marathon, first run in 1897, is the world’s oldest annual marathon and a defining piece of Massachusetts history. What began with just 15 runners has grown into an international event that draws elite athletes, charity runners, and hundreds of thousands of spectators.
When I was growing up, my grandmother owned a home on the Hopkinton, MA common, which was the place to be - the starting line! I have countless fond memories of our entire Italian family coming together with thousands of other spectators to enjoy a day full of activities, both before and after the starting gun. We even got up close to celebrities, Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, who were there filming a movie next door to my grandmother's house in the late '70's.
For many families, Marathon Monday is a cherished tradition - a chance to gather along the route, cheer together, and celebrate Patriots’ Day with a sense of shared pride. Even if you’re not a runner, the energy is contagious: the Wellesley Scream Tunnel, Heartbreak Hill crowds, and the emotional finish on Boylston Street make it unforgettable.
Interesting facts include the race’s official distance change to 26.2 miles in 1924, women being officially allowed to compete starting in 1972, and the event now attracting over 30,000 participants each year.
The place to be now is in Boston, not Hopkinton. In Hopkinton, the roads get closed down at 6:30am, there aren't any events or vendors in the Common anymore, and nothing for the spectators to do except watch the runners stretch and get ready.
Here is a guide to navigate into Boston to enjoy as a spectator if that is your wish.
Marathon Monday was synonymous with family reunion for me. Sure, it was about the runners, but it was a family day for decades. I don't go anymore - it just isn't the same. No more events at the starting point. No more family home located at the Common. No more guaranteed reunions. Those were the days - great days!
