Wordless Wednesday…A Lull In the Action

We have three boxes that are sitting empty for now…Boxes 1, 3, and 4. The breeding season has at least a few more months, so we're hoping for more nests.

In Box 2, there are still just two eggs, but Mama bluebird continues to incubate them.

Our Box: Five of the six eggs have hatched and Mama is feeding and caring for them!

We had a treat yesterday when we walked at Kickerillo. Besides checking on the boxes and walking, we were privy to the “other” animals in the Preserve.

We saw our usual squirrels and Blue Jays, whose vision is amazing. Sitting high in the trees, they’re able to swoop down and grab a recently thrown peanut.

I got to watch a small platoon of ants carry a caterpillar across the side

walk; three deer having their morning breakfast, and a lone turtle making its way in a small bit of water along the edge of the woods.

Mother Nature…so much better than staring at our devices.

Good morning! You know I'm right there with you regarding loving to watch nature!

Kat Palmiotti I know you are. There are so many opportunities out there. When we fished, I loved seeing the flying fish just off the Boca Inlet.

Good morning Kathy. Kickerillo animals have a knack for showing up at the tight time to greet you and Larry on your walks. Enjoy your walks!

Love this. There is something grounding about stepping away and watching what is happening right in front of us. The details you shared—from the bluebird boxes to the ants and deer—are a good reminder that life keeps moving at its own pace. Sometimes a lull is exactly what we need to reset and pay attention again.

Gwen Fowler SC Lakes & Mountains 864-710-4518 I love that we can be in the city and there are parks and preserves where we can see all of this.

Good morning, Kathy... hopefully more birds will find their homes at the Streib estate this spring. There's something so special about watching deer (even if they do eat up people's gardens). They are just so graceful.

Nina Hollander, Broker i'm fascinated by them. When we lived in Leesburg, I'd just planted caladiums. The next day...gone!  I didn't mind though.

Hmm, has this season been less active than seasons past?  Perhaps it is just a late arriving crowd this season, haha.

Brian England it seems that way for a few of the boxes. After we had our big freeze in 2021, the 2022 broods were clearly impacted.

Kathy Streib - there is nothing in this world that gives me more joy than watching nature and children. This is were education begins.

Patricia Feager I agree. Yesterday I saw a young lady reading a book while she walked and I often see children in strollers who are not looking at what nature has provided. They're looking at their devices.

Taking time to smell the roses or to view the offerings of Mother Nature is time well invested. Thank you for sharing about the nests and your walking observations. Well done and good morning

I was sitting on my back porch and a deer came up to the screened in porch and kinda looked in. I sat and watched him for about two minutes, he finally ran off.

I have learnt to not listen to anything while walking. There are so many sounds, birdsong etc., that you miss part of being present listening to a podcast or music.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543   I was thinking the same thing on our walk this morning.   The birds were singing, more than usual, and I thought...why would you want to miss that beautiful sound?

Kathy, I know homeowners dislike a lot of deer, as they can eat all the foliage, but they are so graceful and beautiful.

Joan Cox, Retired Broker/Owner you're right.  When we lived in Northern VA, I had to replace a lot of newly planted caladiums thanks to the deer. But I didn't mind it because I loved seeing them.

Anna "Banana" Kruchten The only little critters I don't like are snakes!!!!  I'm sure your big critters were like big cats!!!

Kathy be careful, blue jays are very protective of their nest, and get very aggressive if you get near them.  A couple of years ago one built a nest i a tree near where I dump my grass clippings.  As soon as I tried to dump the grass clippings they came dive bombing at me.

Apr 15, 2026 11:48 AM

George Souto I'd love to find a blue jay nest!!!!  I was five bombed by a red-winged blackbird when we were in FL. It got me in the head!!!

Kathy, We're not fond of the deer population in our backyard these days. Too many of our once beautiful plantings are going into their stomachs!

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 I can understand that. We had that happen to us when we lived in VA. When we lived in FL, the iguanas ate our flowers and pooped on our boats!!!
