Day 1 of a House Set in Western Rhode Island

Every once in a while you get a project that reminds you exactly why you do this. Day 1 for this custom home in western Rhode Island started like most of our projects do, not with a plan, but with a piece of land and a vision. The homeowner wasn’t looking for a “modular home.” They were looking for their home. Something that fit the site, the trees, the grade, the way the driveway winds in. Something that would have been a nightmare to build conventionally.

That’s where modular forward design changes the game. We don’t take a house and try to force it into modules. We design from the start with the factory, transportation, and set day all in mind. Every wall, every opening, every connection is thought through upfront so when the modules leave the factory, they are complete, protected, and engineered to come together exactly as intended.

What you’re seeing here is the part most people never witness. Tight access. Narrow roads. Trees that don’t move. A crane setting boxes that were built miles away inside a controlled environment where weather never slowed us down.  And then something pretty remarkable happens. What looks like a few oversized boxes becomes a home in a matter of hours. Not weeks. Not months. Hours.

This is what I mean when I say insert tab A into slot B. It only works if the thinking is done early, if the design respects the process, and if the team understands that customization doesn’t have to mean chaos.

There’s a misconception that modular limits design. The reality is the opposite. When you embrace the discipline of modular forward design, you unlock the ability to build highly custom homes with precision, speed, and consistency that site-built construction struggles to match.

This home isn’t a model. It isn’t repeatable. It was designed for this site, for this client, and for this moment. And it came together exactly the way it was supposed to. That’s the difference.

Ken, this is a great behind-the-scenes look at what most people never get to see. The planning and precision up front are what make everything come together so smoothly on set day. I like how you explained that modular doesn’t limit design—it actually requires a higher level of thinking from the beginning. That “built for the site, not forced onto it” approach is exactly what good construction should be. Looking forward to seeing this one come together.

Yes, we will. Yesterday was Day 1. We are working around the rain with this house. This is the only time weather really impacts.

Ken Semler - When it comes to problem-solving when building, you're a Master! I'll bet you were great at difficult jigsaw puzzles and strategy board games as a child too! You see things differently than other builders and I applaud you and your crew! How you fit things together is mind blowing to me!
