Friday Fun…Your First Real Estate Job?

Do you remember your first real estate job?  It might have been your first listing, or the first time you had buyers. Or your first home inspection, loan you originated, appraisal, title, or home staging?

My first real estate “adjacent” job was not as a home stager, but in interior redesign. (In full disclosure, I was an agent for one year in the late 1980s, but that’s a tale for another time)

There was a wonderful interior design and furnishings store in Leesburg, VA, that I visited almost every week. One day, the owners asked me if I was interested in working with one of their clients.

client wanted to do something different in her home but wasn’t sure how to go about it.  They had helped her with drapes and other soft furnishings, but thought I could assist with furniture placement and provide additional accessories.

I thought…why not!

That was my first interior redesign project, and I loved it. My client told me her father visited and loved how she had rearranged the living room. The accountant in her did not want to separate the two end tables in the family room (everything had to balance), but admitted they were taking up too much room.

With some encouragement, she agreed to move one of the end tables to the nanny’s bedroom (where it was needed).

She liked the flow in each room now and loved that she didn’t have to break the bank to do it.

What about you? Share a blurb or write a post about your first real estate or industry-related job!!!  How did it go?

Good morning, Kathy... that's going so far back, I have no more memories. The most I remember is that my first buyer clients were referred to me and ultimately I had to "fire" them as they needed a marriage counselor more than they needed a real estate agent. That's when I learned to fire the wrong clients quickly.

Nina Hollander, Broker I had to laugh as well. You learned early that it's ok to fire your clients.

Kathy Streib I learned early on to be careful about which clients I took on and if I made an error in judgement which ones to fire quickly. That has saved me a lot of time and aggravation over the years.

Good morning Kathy. My first job in the real estate sector was as a loan officer in a Savings and Loan. I met my first broker closing loans for her customers. The rest is history. Enjoy your day.

My first sale was to help my stepson purchase a co-op. How did it go? We were given keys that wouldn't open doors, there were a million questions I didn't know the answer to and had to find out, etc etc. But he did find the right home and closed on it and was happy with the new place. So it all worked out!

Kathy Streib Great question for a Friday. My first real estate experiences taught me quickly that no two transactions are ever the same and that communication is everything. There is nothing like those early days to build the foundation for everything that follows. Thank you for the reminder—fun to look back and see how far we have all come.

When we have success and enjoy what we are doing for the first time, it usually leads to a nice career!  I remember that I was doing some transaction management while I was in the process of getting my real estate license, haha.

Hi Kathy,
Yes, I remember my first transaction. It was a mobile home in a park (leased land) that a gal who worked for me in the corporate world (pre-real estate). We sold that and she bought another home from me. My first double transaction from the same client.

Hi Kathy, I am scratching my head trying to remember that first transaction, but I believe it was a buyer which actually cost me some money. I ended up having to buy a hot water heater as the inspection report never mentioned that it needed to be replaced.

Kathy I will never forget the first mortgage loan I did, it was for a friend of mine.  He told me he wanted to refinance his home when I was out of training and able to do the refinance.  I asked him what was the reason he wanted to refinance?  He told me it was because he wanted to be my first loan.  This is a link to a blog I wrote about it.

My very first transaction as a Realtor, Kathy, was co-listed with my mentor, Ron Sorenson (he has long since passed away), we ended up double-siding the deal. That was exciting!  It is most memorable because the house was owned by an FBI agent who helped take down Warren Jeffs, the infamous polygamist. When recounting the story, he became emotional but was happy to get justice for the victims. It was also his last mission before retiring. I felt so honored to be his agent of choice!

That's a fun walk down memory lane. My very first transaction was a residential lease. I had NO idea what I was doing, but thankfully, I had some great mentors who helped me through it. I decided that I preferred the sales side.
