Don't Be The Dealer... Take Back Expired and Unused Prescription DrugsWhy take back prescription drugs? Surveys  show that a majority  of abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home's medicine cabinet. Keeping these drugs out of the wrong hands reduces the risk of addiction or accidental overdose. Moreover, expired medications can lose effectiveness or even become harmful if taken by mistake. Disposing of them safely helps prevent unintended use.

The DEA’s Take Back Day provides an opportunity to prevent drug addiction and overdose deaths. The October 2025 Take Back Day collected 571,054 pounds of drugs. In the Carolinas and Georgia alone, 25,430 pounds were collected In October. Last year, the DEA collected over 1.3 million pounds of prescription drugs nationwide.  Since its inception in 20210, the program has removed more than 20.3 million pounds of medication from circulation.

Keep in mind that the DEA cannot accept liquids or needles.

The FDA is also asking people to turn in electronic vaping devices and cartridges on National Prescription Drug Take Back Day this Saturday. DEA will collect vape pens or other e-cigarette devices from individual consumers but only after the lithium batteries are removed from the devices. The DEA is not responsible for removing the batteries from the devices.

Good morning, Nina.
When my husband passed away, I think it was the Hospice Nurse who asked me for all of his prescription drugs. She had me mix them in dirt and dispose of them. I thought it was great that she had me do that right away.

Carol Williams hi Carol... I've never heard of that method to mix meds with dirt. Will have to look it up.

I do think it's a great idea to have someplace to bring left over prescription medications!

Kat Palmiotti hi Kat... I'm not a believer in taking lots of meds to begin with... so I'm all for disposing of whatever isn't needed.

Good morning Nina. A nearby town has disposal sites available in multiple locations year round. A needed service. Enjoy your day.

I agree. Having a safe, organized way to dispose of medications is far better than telling people to flush them. Programs like this help protect households and the environment at the same time. Keeping unused prescriptions out of circulation is a simple step that can prevent bigger problems down the road.

Gwen Fowler SC Lakes & Mountains 864-710-4518 flushing meds down the toilet just contaminates the water. People flush all kinds of things that should never be flushed.

Drugs are bad, umm kay, haha.  People should not take drugs; they should eat better, so that they can truly be cured from whatever ailment they suffer from.  The drugs will NOT get the job done!

I follow a number of different experts who would beg to differ with you, even with your autoimmune disease Nina Hollander, Broker and if you want me to send you the information that they share with regard to curing autoimmune diseases naturally, when I see them, I most certainly will and keep an eye out for when they post something about it.

Brian England sure, Brian... but I've seen much of that stuff. I have no issue with natural healing, but I believe it still should be combined with modern medicine.

Brian England hi Brian... can't say I'm quite that extreme on this subject. I have an auto-immune disease that can't be fixed just with diet. There is a place for medications, but it needs to be done thoughtfully.

We are fortunate that we do not have any expired drugs. I can understand how these can be potentially harmful to family members as well as the environment.

Leanne Smith same here, Leanne. But when there are expired drugs it's crazy to dispose of them in a way that harms the environment.

Nina for those who can't wait for a "Take Back" day and need to get rid of old expired meds, there are packets that the drugs can be put into, dissolved, and disposed safely.  Our Health Department at Town Hall provides them for free.

George Souto hi George... that's a great idea. It's not something I've heard of here or seen offered here. I will need to do some research.

Joan Cox, Retired Broker/Owner I only take one medication for my thyroid, so there's never anything to take back. Chris' meds also get finished up. But I know lots of households have tons of expired stuff.

And, it is important for these services so people don't simply flush these meds into the public water system.

Dr. Paula McDonald hi Paula...you are so right. It seems people really resist understanding how flushing all kinds of things just pollutes our water supply.
