Spring Storms ~ Prepare Ahead!

Spring weather patterns are here! North Texas is known for its "changing on a dime" storms. You can experience a beautiful day, and then BAM - one of those famous Spring storms pops up! Two nights ago, a powerful tornado ripped through an area just north of me called Springtown, TX. Lots of damage.

Tomorrow, we are expecting more severe storms to "pop up" throughout the day. This is that time of year when it is a good idea to do a little storm prepping. It is always good to be prepared in case your area gets hit.

These are tried and true preparation suggestions:

🚩 Make sure your devices are charged. Consider purchasing a solar charger if power is lost.

🚩 Check outside areas for lighter objects that need to be secured or brought in.

🚩 Bring in your patio cushions unless you want them visiting the next county!

🚩 These storms often bring damaging hail. Find a place to park your car if you cannot get it into a garage.

🚩 If you have medications that you need, put a few days' worth into a baggie and keep it with you.

🚩 Check your flashlight batteries and replace them with fresh ones in case of a storm that hits at night and renders you without electricity.

🚩 Go over your "Storm Plan" with your family. Which room to go into if things get too dicey. Make sure there is bottled water, first aid supplies, blankets, etc.

🚩 Make sure to include your pets in your storm plan. Have food & water for them.

🚩 If you are out driving and are caught in a severe storm, try to find a safe place to pull over and seek shelter. Also, be mindful of how quickly water can rise, and don't risk driving through an area with rushing water.

Spring weather is never predictable. Therefore, doing some things to be prepared could make a huge difference for you and your family. Be safe out there!

Great advice Dr. Paula McDonald . When storms hit here my biggest concern is we have several large trees in our yard. I make sure that there are no large limbs hanging over our home BUT that doesn't mean the whole tree might not fall on the house.

Yikes, I love those big trees. It is always so sad when they get damaged in a storm.

hi Paula- since moving back to Houston, we've had 3 or 4 occasions where we headed to Larry's closet due to tornado warnings. I always have water, flashlights, our devices, etc in the closet with us.

Yes, Kathy, our Texas thunder boomers are quite something!

Good morning Paula. Never gave it a thought when we lived in downtown Chicago. Now in a far out suburb we are prepared. Luckily, the damage areas have been to the north and south of us, but you just never know. Nature can alter its path at a moments notice. Enjoy your day.

Hey Wayne. I'm hearing you guys are getting some pretty strong storms up that way lately. Stay safe.

Great advice, Paula... easy to follow steps. Fortunately, here in Charlotte we don't typically have storms of such storms that require so much advance preparation.

You are very fortunate, Nina. These storms around her can pop up super fast and they can be scary!

If we are prepared, it makes the storms a little more bearable to weather, haha.

That is true, Brian. I like a good rainy day, but these boomer storms are something!

Paula, we had summer weather in February and March, now 35-50 degree days in April, go figure.   We had a home near me on Sunday lightening hit, and splintered the tree into other homes.   No tornado warnings yet, but did have a bit of hail on Sunday too.

You guys have had some nutty weather up there. The tornadoes are not fun at all.
