Adopt a Shelter Pet Day: April 30

Your New Best Friend Is Waiting 🐶🐱🐾

“Saving one dog will not change the world, but surely for that one dog, the world will change forever.”
— Karen Devison

April 30th is National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day — aka the perfect excuse to fall in love with a dog or cat who really needs you.

Honestly, any day is a great day to adopt. Shelters around Charlotte (and all across the country) are over capacity and full of amazing pets just hanging out, waiting for someone to give them a second chance. Every single one has a story… and they’re all hoping for a happy ending.

The best part? When you adopt, you’re doing way more than bringing home a cute new sidekick. You’re helping ease overcrowded shelters, pushing back against puppy mills, and making space for another animal in need. Not bad for one decision, don't you think?

Whether you're into goofy puppies, chill older dogs, curious kittens, or wise old cats who’ve seen it all — your match is out there.

So if you’ve been thinking about getting a pet… consider this your sign 👀

“It’s a small thing to help one animal, but to that one animal it’s a big thing.”
— Gene Baur

Real Talk: Adoption Saves Lives

Here’s the deal — millions of pets are adopted every year (which is awesome), but millions still don’t make it out of shelters.

A few quick facts:

Each year in the United States, more than 2.5 million dogs and cats are adopted from shelters. Yet, nearly 3 million animals are still euthanized annually due to overcrowding and lack of resources.

Consider this:

  • Only about 20–30% of pets are adopted from shelters or rescue groups
  • 5 out of 10 dogs and 7 out of 10 cats in shelters may be euthanized simply because no one adopts them
  • There may be up to 70 million stray cats in the U.S. alone

The reality is sobering — but adoption is a powerful way to make a difference.

“I really love pets. They’re like children. They know if you really love them or not.”
— Donna Douglas

Bonus: Pets Are Actually Good for You 😄

Not to be dramatic, but adopting a pet might be one of the best things you can do for your health. Dogs get you outside and moving (walks, fresh air, sunshine ☀️), and cats… well, they’re basically tiny therapists who live in your house.

According to the CDC, pet owners often have:

  • Lower blood pressure
  • Less stress
  • Fewer lonely days

Besides, there’s just something about coming home to a wagging tail or a loud purr that makes everything better.

“Our perfect companions never have fewer than four feet.”
— Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette

Good morning Nina. Our Yorkie was a a rescue dog. He ruled the kingdom in his time with us. If we ever get another dog it will definitely be a rescue. Enjoy your day.

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 hi Sheila... our shelters are so crowded and over capacity it's heart-breaking. I wish people would go and visit some of them and adopt instead of buying a pet.

My dog is my best bud. I honestly don't know how I did life before him! If I could adopt a sibling for him, I would, but I - currently - don't have room for another dog. Next house, though, next house!

Andrea Bedard at one time we had two cats and two dogs. We now live with one of each. It's a lot of work to properly take care of pets and a home in which pets live. But I could always go for another dog and/or cat.

Nina Hollander, Broker  when Covid first hit many people opted for a pet as they were not going anyplace. With remote work, it continued and now that some people are required to go into offices at least a few days a week, the shelters are getting overloaded.

Ed Silva, 203-206-0754 hi Ed... don't get me started on this particular topic! I see red when I hear about people bringing back pets.

Brian England hi Brian... the sad part is that we keep having events to "clear the shelters" and as soon as they are cleared they are filled up again.

Working with Kelly is a good move

I’m long overdue for getting a dog. I haven’t had the heart to bring one home since my Bella passed in 2022, and it’s hard to believe it’s been that long. Life has been busy, and we’ve taken a few trips, so the freedom of not needing someone to watch her was nice—but I do miss the companionship and cuddles. These adoption events are wonderful, and I always hope every single one finds a loving family.

Kelly McGovern I know exactly how you feel, Kelly. When we lost our Gracie, it took years for me to get another dog. But I did and he's just been the best companion for the last seven years.
