Growing up my mother had flowers that would bloom in our small yard throughout the growing months of the year. She loved flowers. In one small spot in her garden was a section for flowers that would grow in the Spring months, like daffodils, crocus, and lilies of the valley. And there were the taller flowers we called flags. They were the brown flower with yellow variety.
It wasn’t until I was older and started to see purple flags in other places and in the art work of Vincent Van Gogh that I became aware of the name iris for the similarly shaped flowers. And that there were even smaller shaped irises that were just as fascinating and beautiful as the variety my mother had in her garden.
Now that I have my own garden, I am fortunate to be able to grow the purple variety of iris. They are in full bloom right now, and they make me think of my mother’s love of flowers. I truly enjoy watching perennial flowers as they awaken, by reappearing through the surface of the earth, and proceed to grow tall and bloom in the warming months of Spring.
