Grab you boots…it’s Rodeo Time!!

By K. Ross

Let’s do a quick check-in… are we all still surviving this Virginia weather?! One minute it’s sunshine, the next minute you’re dodging rain(which we desperately need!) like it’s your full-time job. But hey, if there’s one thing we do well here, it’s finding something fun to do no matter what the forecast looks like!

Now let’s get into this week’s blog…this one has me a little extra excited. We’re talking about a rodeo—yes, a real, boots-on-the-ground, bulls and all kind of rodeo, right here in Virginia!

So let me introduce you to Blue Toad Hard Cider. Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, this place is already known for its laid-back vibe, mountain views, and locally crafted cider made from Nelson County apples. It’s one of those spots where you go to relax, hang out, and just enjoy the scenery, but apparently, they also know how to throw a rodeo!

Now here’s my honest moment, I have not been to this rodeo before. Not once. But let me tell you, I have been hearing about it, and I am so ready to change that this year!

The event is called the Rockfish River Rodeo, and it’s exactly what you’re picturing and then some. We’re talking professional cowboys, bull riding (yes, actual raging bulls!), barrel racing, mutton busting (which I need to see in person), and even bucking broncos. Basically, it’s a full-on, high-energy show that lasts a few hours and brings that true rodeo experience right here to Virginia.

And can we just pause for a second… a rodeo… at a cidery… in the mountains?! I mean, how “Virginia” is that?!

The 2026 rodeo is happening at Blue Toad, and from what I’ve seen, it’s one of those events that people mark their calendars for early. It even tends to sell out quickly, which tells me this is not something you want to wait on if you’re thinking about going.

What I love most about this (even though I haven’t experienced it yet) is that it feels like more than just an event. It’s a whole day. You’ve got the open space, mountain views, cider flowing, likely some great food, and then BAM, you’re watching a rodeo show unfold right in front of you. That’s the kind of unique experience I am always here for.

And let’s be real for a second, this Jersey girl doesn’t know the first thing about rodeos. I don’t own cowboy boots, and I definitely won’t be riding any bulls anytime soon! But that’s what makes it fun, right? Trying something new, stepping a little outside the norm, and just enjoying the experience.

So, this is me officially putting it out there, I am planning to attend this year, and I am counting down the days. Will I be cheering way too loud? Probably. Will I be Googling “what is mutton busting” before I go… absolutely!

If you’re looking for something different to do, something a little outside your usual winery or brewery visit, this might be it. A rodeo at a cidery in the Blue Ridge Mountains… I mean, come on!

Whether you’ve been before and already love it, or you’re like me and getting ready for your first time… maybe I’ll see you there!  Happy Rodeo-ing!!

January seems a little cold for a rodeo! Hoping for great weather for this year's rodeo!
