How Raleigh played a part in the how Mother's Day got it start!
Mother’s Day is a time to slow down and reflect on the women who shaped our lives with love, patience and strength. It is a day filled with lunch, flowers, candy, phone calls and quiet moments of gratitude. But behind the celebration is a story that reaches deeper than many people realize.
The holiday traces back to the early 1900s, when Anna Jarvis from Grafton, WV worked to create a national day to honor mothers. Her vision was simple. She wanted a day that recognized the personal sacrifices and unconditional love that mothers give every day. Alongside her efforts was Madeline Jane Jones Procter from Raleigh, NC, who supported the movement and shared in the mission to give mothers the recognition they deserved.
What makes this story even more meaningful for those in our area is its local connection. Madeline Jane Jones Procter lived in Raleigh and is laid to rest at Historic Oakwood Cemetery. It is a quiet reminder that even traditions we celebrate nationwide can have roots close to home.
Motherhood looks different for everyone. It may be a mother, grandmother, stepmother, mentor or someone who stepped in when it mattered most. What they all share is a steady presence and a love that asks for little in return.
As we celebrate today, it is worth pausing to say thank you. Thank you for the meals, the advice, the patience and the countless small moments that often go unnoticed but mean everything.
“Life doesn’t come with a manual, it comes with a mother.”
To all who are celebrating, remembering or honoring someone special, may your day be filled with warmth, love and meaningful moments.
Happy Mother’s Day. 💐
