“Every language spoken in America carries a story, a history, and a dream.”
The United States is often described as a melting pot, but it may be more accurate to call it a giant conversation happening in hundreds of different languages every single day.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau and linguistic researchers, more than 350 languages are spoken in homes across America today. Some estimates place the number closer to 430+ languages when smaller Indigenous and immigrant languages are included.
Of course, English is the most commonly spoken language, followed by Spanish. But the linguistic diversity across the country is truly remarkable.
Some of the most widely spoken languages in the United States include:
- Spanish
- Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese)
- Tagalog (Filipino)
- Vietnamese
- Arabic
- French
- Korean
- Russian
- German
- Hindi
The United States is also home to many Native American and Alaska Native languages that continue to preserve important cultural traditions and histories, including:
- Navajo
- Cherokee
- Yupik
- Dakota
- Apache
Do you speak more than one language? If not, what language other than English would you like to speak fluently? Given my geographic location, Spanish would be my second language of choice.
