Some may remember the movie Pollyanna with Haley Mills who portrayed a child who appeared never to be unhappy and she inspired a town. The author was Elanor H. Porter who wrote these words in the actual novel
“There is something about everything to be glad about, if you keep hunting long enough to find it.”
Of course sometimes, as in the movie, in our lives there is difficulty to keep hunting for that gladness, that joy, that inspiration.
Here is where our own attitudes must persevere.
“You cannot control what happens to you, but you can control your attitude toward what happens to you, and in that, you will be mastering change that than allowing it to master you.”
Brian Tracy
Courage is an attitude to keep going
when the going gets tough.
John Wayne is quoted as saying:
“Courage is being scared to death, but saddling up anyway.”
One of the words we often fail to embrace or remember is this one word “Resolve.” This word has several definitions. As a verb resolve means to solve or decide. Then as a noun resolve is a firmness or purpose, a steadfast unwavering determination.
Returning to the novel Pollyanna, her firmness or purpose, her resolve rested in her attitude toward life, to be glad even when it was difficult. This was especially tested when her Aunt faced criticism from the town's people.
Often, we have heard this quote:
"That every cloud has a silver lining."
Of course, finding that silver lining takes sometimes both courage and resolve because often the silver lining is not evident at first, second or even at the fifth glance.
We all have the capacity to discover what Porter wrote years ago. Discovering joy in the little things in life when we face difficult times is possible with our courage and resolve.
